[Blogged] Why It's Harder Than Ever to Know What to Type Into an AI Search Bar. https://open.substack.com/pub/aarontay/p/the-blank-box-problem-why-its-harder

Edit: An earlier version of this included a NotebookLM generated image with 2 text sections with minor issues. I've fixed it.

Sorry about that. This is a good reminder to check properly even for low-stakes situations.

[Last blog post of 2025] "AI-powered search" hides at least 4 different things—post-retrieval features, semantic search, LLM ranking, and synthesis. Your concerns about one may not apply to another. New post unpacking what's actually under the hood. https://aarontay.substack.com/p/what-do-we-actually-mean-by-ai-powered

What Do We Actually Mean by "AI-Powered Search"?

When we say "AI-powered search engine," we're conflating at least four different things—and your concerns about one may not apply to another.

A 2025 Deep Dive of Consensus: Promises and Pitfalls in AI-Powered Academic Search

The recent addition of Consensus Deep Search mode is a great boost to its retrieval capabilities. On top of that, it has one of the most appealing interfaces out there, with color-coded references, and the Consensus Meter, for all its methodological faults, is likely to appeal to undergraduates and less advanced users. Add advanced pre-filters and LibKey integration to institutional full-text, and it is easy to guess this will be a hit for many users doing narrative literature reviews.

@JMarkOckerbloom @nyhan yeah if i can imagine feuds over a way Research is characterised... though I could imagine a opposite perverse incentive, since a lot of cites to papers really shouldn't be there and are "neutral", authors might keep quiet just to keep the cites :)

Replying to
@nyhan the XPAC expansion pack is particularly risky, adds 190M record not just from datacite but also thousands of repositories. If any of these get "polluted" , we going to have issues

Replying to
@nyhan crowd sourcing is nice idea but im skeptical researchera would do it, other citation sentiment/intent schemes would have taken off.

Why Ghost References Still Haunt Us in 2025—And Why It's Not Just About LLMs
https://aarontay.substack.com/p/why-ghost-references-still-haunt . I'm not too sure about this one , it's probably underplaying the role of LLMs in ghost references but still interesting.

@hye@glammr.us you are an expert in your field. But is #1 really an issue? When i ask llms to critique my work it can definitely tell me which are serious issues which are nitpicks. Granted at your level it might not be there yet in domain expertiss but from what I hear from many researchers it's almost there , and I don't see why progress will just stop now

Replying to
@hye@glammr.us I mean I could see it saturating at level of say just a decent post doctoral student but that would still be above most humans... and sure some domains would lack more training data than others

@rodrigocostas1@mastodon.social @QSS_ISSI@scicomm.xyz my 5 cents. The controversial Beall's list, the list that causes so much polarization even among librarians. Regardless of one's position, I find it hard to believe the initial peer reviewers / editor handling it weren't aware of the controversial nature of it and yet it passed peer review initially.. yet a letter from Frontiers and they suddenly realised the issue? Er...
