Accidentally became a retro gaming YouTuber, although perhaps the only one who combines technical explanations of how the games of my youth worked with the most unimaginably awful puns available. And cheap wolf ears.

This profile is only occasionally that, and is more likely trash-level wittering about music and British culture interspersed with shitposts.

He/him, ally, don't be a dick.

One of the "joys" of doing what I do is that I get to work with the kind of enterprise companies who are doing that whole "we are on a journey from being 'an x company' to being 'an AI-native company that does x'" thing and... wow, the failure modes are not what I expected. Herewith, a long, confusing, unstructured and sporadically updated thread on that premise. Engage your muting circuits now.

I will admit to enjoying AI firms jumping from the "massively subsidised GPU compute" era to stage 3 enshittification, and the dawning realisation in some quarters that they have outsourced their knowledge work to a system where someone else holds a dial marked "Clever Hans" at one end and "just an ordinary horse, just an innocent horse" at the other.

@grumpygamer This mirrors my experience so much, even down to the random appearances of const in C code. There's a point I reach in pretty much every extended session with a coding agent where I start thinking, "I'm using exactly the techniques I'd use to manage a lazy employee who doesn't realise how blatantly obvious their attempts to avoid doing the job they've been asked to do are".

Agile development methodologies and Western democracy share the problem that they're lovely ideas thought up by people who never considered the possibility of a bad actor acting from within the system.

I do wonder what would happen if a finance director said, "this company is too complex for standard advice on accounting to apply, we're going to use a combination of practices discredited in the early 1960s, unproven 1990s pop-management fads, and all of our 'certifications' are going to be 2-day unexamined courses which people can take their laptops to so they can answer work emails during them" the way routinely happens in IT organisations.

I suspect the revolving door bearings might glow.

@TechConnectify a friend used to have one of these old CRT projectors set up in his lounge on a huge scaffold. Given the small size of typical UK houses there wasn't enough throw for more than the picture size of an average TV for the time, and the logistical issues of a lounge full of scaffolding, but he swore by the picture quality. (Also yes, a temperamental beast in need of constant adjustment, so in addition to the scaffolding said lounge needed a stepladder present at all times.)

@nikki@topspicy.social It's weird - I love the fact it does nothing algorithmic, that there is absolutely no agenda to it other than letting someone know they posted something you appreciated.

@vampiress@eigenmagic.net "so anyway, I emulated a 486/25 and...." (This might... er... be related to a thing I'm genuinely doing. Yeah, I know, real hardware and all of that but the slowest thing I have access to is a Pentium-75)
