I’m also an atheist, socialist, bibliophile that enjoys real ale and cricket. Before COVID I used to go to the cinema, the theatre and music and comedy gigs much more frequently than I do nowadays

I have fallen in love with Bilbao! I only visited the place to view the total eclipse of the Sun and tick off an item on my bucket list.
However, it is a beautiful city, and for someone that has never bothered to learn to drive, a city for pedestrians. I will definitely be coming back here, even if it is to take that day trip to Gernika that I didn't manage this time around.
It’s eleven hours until my oldest friend - I should say, the friend that I’ve known the longest - gets married and I will be his best man. I have to give a speech. I haven’t written it yet. I have some ideas, but I am going to sleep on it. After all, my homework that always got the best marks was written on the school bus! I am not an amateur-crastinator: stop groaning at the back!
With the passing of Dolly Parton, the world became a little bit less wonderful. I could quite quickly run out of superlatives in trying to describe her. If I had to pick out one fact about how truly amazing she was, I would be torn between her personal donations to help develop the Moderna COVID vaccine and her book buying program to ensure kids learn to love reading. As for a personal quote of hers that always makes me smile, I’ll go with this: "I'm not offended by all the dumb blonde jokes because I know I'm not dumb - and I'm not blonde either." Sleep well Dolly, I will always love you!
I am 66 books into this year, and next up I shall be rereading this one. I have it on my Kindle (other ebook readers are available) but feel that I need an actual physical copy sitting on my politics shelf.

I have just visited the most amazing camera shop in Westminster. If you are looking for anything for your photography needs and are in the area, I can thoroughly recommend Mr Cad. Really helpful and friendly staff: a proper shop of the Old School variety rarely found in this online age.
The journalist Rod Liddle died last week, and I deliberately didn’t say anything about it at the time because I believe that you really shouldn’t say anything bad about people that have just died: you should only say good.

I am carrying a very large camera that I am about to try to take into a strip cub that has a very prominent "No Photography" sign next to the entrance!
I am very good friends with someone that works there, and she wants to see the photos that I took of the total solar eclipse last week. We were supposed to meet this morning for coffee before she started work, but she overslept. I shall report back about how much trouble I cause!
Me: the US date format is so stupid! Virtually everyone else uses DD/MM/YYYY, and doing it MM/DD/YYYY serves no purpose and makes no sense!
Also me: I am totally on board with making the 25th of September Dolly Parton day! After all, in the MM/DD/YYYY date format that reads 9/25 so it makes perfect sense!
So I am 26 books into the year, and my next read will be this. I have read it before, but only on my Kindle, and this is definitely an actual physical book that needs to be on my shelves

After finishing book number 27 for the year, and continuing my commitment to reread all of the James Bond novels, this becomes my next challenge.
By definition, if you have a favourite book in a series, then you also have to have a least favourite book. This is quite possibly the title holder of my least favourite Bond novel, and the sooner I get it out of the way, the sooner I can get started on some of Gardner’s better contributions to the series.

As much as I wanted Count Binface to win the Clacton by-election, I’m not certain that that would have destroyed Nigel Farage’s political career: I seem to remember him standing against the Speaker of the House of Commons at a general election and finishing third: second place went to someone dressed as a dolphin!
The outcome of the parliamentary inquiry may not dent the support of the most vociferous Reform voters, but could bring about an end to his political ambitions in a way that Count Binface could only dream about. (I realise that I am late to the party with this observation, but I have just found this meme and need an excuse to share it!)

I have just reviewed all of the photos that I took in Bilbao on Wednesday of the solar eclipse. I have two or three beauties showing the corona at totality, but failed miserably at capturing a photograph of the diamond ring. I will post them on here eventually, but I am currently experiencing difficulties in connecting my good camera up to a platform to post the photos on the web
