#craft #art #makeandcreate #crafting

Today at a crafting event our talk turned to AI and the consensus was a healthy rejection of it in art and making of all kinds. The shared value was that the excess brushstroke, the dropped stitch, the wonky lining, the uneven line… all make the piece *human*. And without the human, there is no beauty in art; there is no art.

#disability #selfadvocacy

I’ve learnt there’s quite an art to having the ‘so, what do you do?’ convo with strangers. Recently I’ve used ‘I’m not required to work, so that means I am fortunate in being able to pick and choose meaningful projects’. It’s empowering.

Yesterday I had the question where I wasn’t familiar enough to use that. I said ‘I volunteer’. He replied ‘nothing wrong with that!’. I’m thinking he did in fact think there was at least a little something wrong with it 🙄

@Gaolaitch@cupoftea.social the first thing that comes to mind with the word ‘holes’ is the lyrics from the Mercury Rev song of the same name… ‘Holes, dug by little moles, angry jealous spies, got telephones for eyes’.

#chappel #viaduct #sunset #train #railway #facts The Chappel viaduct was built between 1847 and 1849 and spans 1,060 feet (320m). One of the largest brick-built structures in England, it uses over 7 million bricks and reaches 75 feet in height.

@david_chisnall@infosec.exchange @davidnjoku@mastodon.world though I can see your angle, but it comes down to if/when in the process you’re feeling your win/loss. You choose £50k - you could see it as ‘losing’ a fair chance at £1m You flip and get £0 - you could see it as ‘losing’ £50k or ‘losing’ the fair chance at £1m You flip and get £1m - there’s no feeling of loss

@TeflonTrout@beige.party @david_chisnall@infosec.exchange @davidnjoku@mastodon.world absolutely, we’re hardwired to think that way. It’s all about how we frame it. We could think, “well I could’ve had £50k but declined that and *chose* to gamble for the chance of £1m, them’s the breaks, that’s the nature of chance”. I’m guessing those who would feel the ‘loss’ of £50k more acutely would not be likely to take the flip.

@Gaolaitch@cupoftea.social I feel I’m somewhat fortunate in than my own inconsistent sleep patterns don’t impact on me too terribly (because I don’t have a strict schedule where I *need* to do stuff if I’m fatigued/unrested). I do like using the term ‘taking to my bed’ like an overdramatic Victorian waif, also Radio4 Extra on constantly in the bedroom because a) tinnitus and b) a 4x-ish daily repeat cycle so anything missed by snooze can generally be caught up.

@Gaolaitch@cupoftea.social my *understanding* of joy is that it’s highly individual - for some it’s an elusive elixir, for others, they’re able to find ‘joy’ in many given times or spaces. Joy for *me* is probably described as much in terms of absence than substance - a clarity of mind, the lack of stresses, the clearing of the internal clutter enabling me to see and savour the purity of moments, people, places. Liberty. Autonomy. Realising, really relishing, the ‘taken-for-granted’s.

@Gaolaitch@cupoftea.social The council leader was worried about the ‘age appropriateness’, and trans ideology in displays but also “…the pause on promoting events on social media related only to Pride Month, and occasions such as Remembrance Day or Holocaust Memorial Day were unaffected.” So they have no problem with kids seeing depictions of genocide, but a trans person? *WILL SOMEONE PLEASE THINK OF THE CHILDREN* 😱

@Gaolaitch@cupoftea.social also, for me, there’s a distinction between a more slow burn happiness building like a warm glow and an unexpected moment of joy. Often it’ll be a raw spark, and the overwhelm will present as a burst of tears - but it’s just the mass rush of pure emotion having to come out somewhere! This has most often happened when watching live music or performances.

@Gaolaitch@cupoftea.social that’s what years of sensory deprivation can do, I guess. Now, of course, being able to embrace raw emotion (both good and bad) and see the process of, um, *processing* it as positive and stimulating is wholly beneficial to today’s me, but I wouldn’t recommend it overall 😅

Help a gal out, fediverse! I’m 46 and wanting gig chums for venues in and around #Halstead #Sudbury #Colchester #BuryStEdmunds Most genres of live music, was a teen in the 90s so grunge, punk, rock, hardcore and emo are my wheelhouse, but I can do civilised too (folk, I guess, might be less manic?).

I (un)helpfully explained that it’s not what the dolphins want; if they had a bucket list it’d probably include never being forced to cuddle humans and besides, what kind of aspiration is that? Surely you’d want something more meaningful and personal on your list? Reader, it was another of Angela’s Bulldozed Conversations 😅

#threegoodthings 🪟 - we’ve hit 30+ degrees again and this is the first time my window hack (emergency foil blanket over the panes) has been tested in this heat - seems to be working! 🪟 - I’m taking steps to actively ‘unspiral’ myself rather than being fractious and abrasive (except a tiny bit of abrasiveness 🫠) 🪟 - I’m learning to be kinder to myself regarding my health issues, and not to feel guilty to give myself a break if I need it

Fediverse, how does one cope with injustice sensitivity in situations where others normalise immoral/illegal behaviour? Had a colleague tell me yesterday that I ‘rub her up the wrong way’ because of a conversation we had where she admitted to giving stock away (she claimed to be ‘entitled to’) and I had said I wish I hadn’t witnessed her saying this in front of me (ie if you’re going to steal, don’t let me know about it). *I’m* the one coming across as the bad guy. I’m distressed!

@david_chisnall@infosec.exchange @davidnjoku@mastodon.world this notably isn’t that. It’s spending £0 to have a go at a game where you have 50% chance of winning £1m. Or, alternately you can have £50k. You’re not *spending* £50k; you never had it in the first place and it’s not part of the wager. The two options are standalone, no cross reliance or influence.

@Gaolaitch@cupoftea.social the person in that particular example is also a social friend, as are some of the other culprits, and I guess that’s the bit that’s bothersome. Because they’re not terrible people, they just do occasional morally questionable (to me) things. And apparently that’s normal and if I shun/reject it I’m the oddball. Which is not a nice feeling. All of this is just a rant more about my own psychological failings in understanding others than anything else, I feel.
