"What we see here are manifestations of petro-masculinity: a violent, misogynistic, climate-denying version of manhood, expressed through an antisocial driving culture." -George Monbiot
This is so disappointing to hear happening in the UK.
This Albertan lived in the UK in 2008. I was impressed to see small cars in abundance then. Occasionally you'd see a Land Rover. We did live in farm country, though. Alberta has always been a home to petro-masculinity, being a petro-state, but I think it's gotten worse. I see monstrous raised trucks "rolling coal" most days. A weird mix of rage and grief sweep over me. Grief over whatever society and each of us failed to do to stop this toxicity from growing and rage at the irresponsibly turned eye from authority.
You know the provincial government is talking about regulating alternative transportation, like e-scooters? I'm not taking a major stand on this because I have my own conflicted thoughts on both sides (happy to have that convo). But one thing that is crystal clear to me:
This gov won't regulate far more toxic and dangerous drivers in tank-like trucks. Pedestrians and cyclists and kids play in the street while these things roar by. I find it reprehensible that they are permitted on the roads. How many people must die?
