I’m a child of the 80s, a technology enthusiast, former desktop publisher, and an advocate and supporter of libre-licensed, open-source software. I'm also a very happy and satisfied GNU+Linux user and former Classic Mac OS / Mac OS X user.

Originally from the U.S., I am involuntarily living in Trumagapistan and believe we’re all basically fucked. The problem is fundamentally larger than just Trump; right-wing-ism is a cancer in the U.S. and every other country it’s tried or tolerated.

@Ollivdb@nrw.social @jaykuo@universeodon.com No foreign natural person, no organization, and no government should trust the U.S. government again. And since it *is* we the people who put these miscreants in office over and over again, I don't think they should trust us, either. I wouldn't. As an American, I *already* don't.

@georgetakei@universeodon.com I have a completely insane idea in response to this. As gas prices go up, people need to continue to buy only the same dollar amount, and when it gets to the point that they run out of gas, then leave cars everywhere as a sign of national protest, clogging up neighborhood streets, main roads, thoroughfares, entrance and exit ramps, and highways themselves.

@Ollivdb@nrw.social @jaykuo@universeodon.com The best thing you folks can do it to take down your own growing right wing and not let the court system or the public be conned into sympathizing with them or any claims they make about how holding them to account somehow = tyranny.

@colinmford@typo.social Demonstrating yet again that, when it comes to the Golden Rule, whomever has the gold makes the rules. Who'd have thought they would have expressed this, publicly, in such a literal manner.

@jodmentum@apobangpo.space @sundogplanets@mastodon.social So, I propose we call this the "Great Space Data Race Boondoggle", and furthermore I propose that companies absolutely *should* do this anyhow, for *precisely* the reasons Taranis has put forward. It would cause a wide ranging, catestrophic failure of any corporation involved, which would then put them out of the way so that other, better run companies could take over.

@athlete4@techhub.social @sundogplanets@mastodon.social Back during the era when the international community was writing the Outer Space Treaty and other laws (the 1960s, that is) there was no concept of individuals building and launching their own rockets. As I understand it (someone here correct me if I'm wrong) the laws on the books pretty much just target nation states, not individuals. Moreover, it's one thing to have a law; it's another thing entirely to be able to enforce it.

@athlete4@techhub.social @sundogplanets@mastodon.social For example, no nation is allowed to claim any other celestial object, in whole or in part, as their own. Therefore, as an example, the Moon legally doesn't belong to anybody. However, if someone built and flew their own rockets and went to the Moon, started digging around, and built houses (metaphorically speaking) it's not like the U.S. or anyone else could stop them.

@tiffanycli@mastodon.social In all seriousness, I'm really glad this court ruling came down. The next question is: what do we (as a society) do about it?

@evacide If Democrat senators actually go along with this, they've just ensured that the Dem Party loses the midterms and possibly the next general election. Even if there's some kind of legitimate aspect to this, and even if Schumer has absolutely 0% appeasement in his head, he's helping to sign the party's death warrant.

@xankarn To the extent that indifference dogs our political footsteps, we have to get people to understand 𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙨 situation in particular 𝒄𝒂𝒏𝒏𝒐𝒕 and 𝒘𝒊𝒍𝒍 𝒏𝒐𝒕 be resolved without first getting Republicans out of office 𝙖𝙣𝙙 putting progressive Democrats into office 𝙞𝙣 𝙢𝙖𝙟𝙤𝙧𝙞𝙩𝙮. I think former Ambassador Susan Rice was right: we 𝙙𝙖𝙧𝙚 𝙣𝙤𝙩 operate with a “forgive and forget” mentality, and so just electing “Democrats” is not going to be sufficient. In fact, I think we're screwed if we do.

@sarahjamielewis@mastodon.social I'll start with the disclaimer “I'm an end user, not a developer. The closest thing to source code I've ever written was the most basic of GW-BASIC stuff in high school, and before many or most of you were born.” That said, I'm very happy with Firefox. I've been running it alone on both desktop and my Android phones for the last ca. 12 years. I've been a part of discussions, most recently in TuxDigital's Discord community, and the takeaway I have is basically: ↓
