I have actually read a yudwhatsit book - though I never properly went down that hole, thanks in no small part to early 2010s @davidgerard@circumstances.run - and now I'm scared to learn how it fits into the present nonsense

@fribbledom@mastodon.social I remain a 'code is the way I think about a problem' person; I feel like there isn't an opening for a language that can do that but which cannot itself be the code

I'm a fairly well balanced person, for the circumstances, but every now and again I read something on my phone about the state of trans rights or healthcare in the UK and go a little bit insane

ftr this is now up to 39,183 - with the most recent ones uploaded yesterday. I get the impression this last lot are the ones that were originally rejected for 'personal information' as most of those that I have opened are like 'my daughter is trans this is shit'

Not actually for sewing; [Redacted] is poking at a boardgame design using hex tiles, and while the tiles could be 3d printed the labels would be better as glued bits of paper in the centre - but how to cut them out efficiently?

@davidgerard@circumstances.run sorry, the future of programming is abusing a ToS loophole that lets you get tokens for 1/30th the price? That anthropic hasn't yet decided to consistently close but might at any time? I love to operate 12 months in the future

Phone apps with swipe gestures make me feel a million years old. I can handle bringing up a side menu or whatever, because that makes some level of spatial sense, but on a list of episodes I'm never going to remember what favourites and what downloads and what deletes - especially since it's mostly on accident while trying to do something else

Another five and a half thousand (to 28,300) today, including mine - though that spinoff article from the other day implied that the true total was more like 40,000

The trouble with electing two board positions by STV when there are two factions is that ⅓ of the vote is enough to guarantee one of the seats - and thus a whopping ⅔ majority is needed to prevent that. This is why there wasn't really any avoiding the split of a board position to each side last year by better tactical voting, only getting more turnout. Unless one side gives up, or the other gets an overwhelming majority some other way, we will probably end up with roughly half the elected positions being FSU people in a few years
It's also not a surprise that their guy was elected first. Like this time, there were two FSU guys (plus an obvious crank) vs a larger set of normal people, so they were inevitably going to get their third together on an earlier round of counting even if there were fewer voters on that side. The same will happen again if we don't get enough for two-thirds to vote against them in some way; the order is secondary so long as you rank everyone else above them

The way to mess with this process to favour a smaller majority than two thirds - which INZ obviously have not done, despite insinuations - is to change up the number of board positions for election at the same time in some way.
For example, if a single position went up for election every six months (or, each position was voted for independently) a simple majority would be needed to win, and the function of the runoff voting would just be to ensure the winner actually had a majority rather than a plularity. If it was four positions every two years meanwhile the minority position would be all but guaranteed a board position (assuming they could muster a bare 20% of the vote) but they would be much more likely to be outvoted 3:1 on the board by a coalition that could consistently muster 60%.

More versions, though I still want to see what e.g. a whole west coast of the south island looks like. May still push it to live because even if they don't look 100% how I want it it's still not awful or unhelpful. Thoughts?

Obviously, electing them via STV is much better than the alternative: I remember in primary school we elected two class representatives to the student council every year (I don't know why; unlike highschool I don't remember ever hearing from the council outside of this). It being the 2000s, all the boys* in the class voted for boys ('what are you, gay?' was the implication if not the explicit words, this not being a secret ballot), and all the girls voted for girls, so if there were two girls running and three or more boys, the girls got in, and vice versa. FSU have so far only ever put in two candidates at a time, while the opposition is not coordinated, so they would win via a more first-past-the-post system
*gender not accurate, obviously; I wasn't bucking this trend for one
