@gnate This article brings up a lot of thoughts for me, living in Canada. Mostly around the gaps where the safety net fails us.

For example:

• emergency care remains pretty accessible, regardless of income
• disability income has fallen far below the cost of housing
• hospice care exists but hard to access
• long term care has long wait lists, some are dreadful, and people may be placed very far from family
• PSW support for those living in their own homes is inadequate. Workers are underpaid, overbooked, and constrained in what they can do.
• Medical assistance in dying ("MAID") exists here. It's great in theory if a person has money and supports, and can die on their own terms, surrounded by family. But there's lots of evidence of disabled and homeless people experiencing significant pressure to sign the form.

The universality of our health care continues to produce superior outcomes vs US, at about half the cost. But the gaps are real, and are deliberate policy choices. We could do so much better.

@relache@woof.group Thank goodness for wildlife centres, and people like you who stop to help.

@relache@woof.group Reminds me of the morning after a huge rain storm, we found 2 baby black squirrels in a planter on our front porch. On advice of the local wildlife rescue, we put a hot water bottle and towel beside them in the planter, and partly covered them by a box. By the next day, they were gone -- presumably taken back by their mom after she had found a replacement home.

@chriscorrigan Indeed. I hadn't realised a biography of Camus would be that interesting. Adding that to the reading pile.

But also ... The subject of the October 2025 Temagami manhunt was being chased because he said he was "a perpetrator of genocide and a threat to civilization" after having purchased a semi-automatic and 180 rounds of ammunition. After capture, he was deemed to be suffering from paranoid psychosis and held under the Mental Health Act. He was former Canadian military. Apparently unrelated, 4 young men, also former military, have been charged with terrorism after an apparent plot to forcibly seize cottages and land near Quebec City, in preparation for the zombie apocalypse. https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/montreal/former-members-of-military-facing-terrorism-charges-informant-9.7068700 I see that zombie apocalypse was a right-wing QAnon conspiracy related to Covid vaccines. https://slate.com/technology/2023/10/5g-zombies-apocalypse-emergency-alert-system-conspiracy-theory.html Destructive conspiracy theories spilling out into real life. #ConspiracyTheories #AntiVax

@z3r0fox@mastodon.social Last night at the free meal program I volunteer at, they were rationing the orange juice. I was surprised it has started so soon. It made me think there will come a time when OJ is a rare luxury to many.
