@sil I need to show you one of my modern web dev rants. We’re literally (yes, literally) bootstrapping 4,000,000 LOC for a hello world. I would say that this is peak dumbassery, but somehow people keep finding new ways to shoehorn in more accidental complexity, brittleness, and new ways to break the contract of the web into modern frameworks.

These jams are just the perfect vibe for where I am in my year and energy.

Im pretty sure we’re all on low-power mode at this point. But this might be the most restrained #phish I’ve ever seen.

Admittedly I have a lower-than-average sample to draw from… but I stand by my analysis.

They’re keeping their powder dry. NYE is going to be something else this year!

Kate and me: *talking about surveillance states*

Alexa: “sorry, I didn’t quite get that”

Us: “shut up, nobody’s talking to you”

Alexa: “ooops! I guess I dropped into the wrong conversation. I’ll retreat back to my digital corner and pretend I didn’t hear anything about surveillance states”

If you’ve been applying endlessly and hearing nothing back, it’s not a personal failure.

The job market is soft, but more importantly, hiring is broken.

I spent time with recruiter Will Wegert unpacking what’s actually happening & what human paths still leak through a very inhuman system.

The result is a heartfelt, documentary-style field manual for surviving this tech job winter with dignity & clarity.

If this season has been hard, I hope this helps.

My echo just upgraded.

It has been offering the update after every command. “no.” I turned the upgrade prompt off. It kept pushing.

Finally, Amazon rolled out the update unilaterally and one day I was greeted with an irritating, uncanny valley voice.

Now that a few weeks have passed, I will admit the NLP capabilities are much stronger. That’s been positive.

But I don’t need a “Genuine People Personality”

If I ask for tonight’s low, I don’t need you editorializing the friggin’ weather!

@jamesh @sil oh, I admit it’s a deliberately hyperbolic statement. I guess it’s more to express my personal (and inevitable) “old man yells at cloud” frustration. At one time a web app could be built with an editor and an empty dir. now we need 4M LOC before we write a single line. It’s kinda comical when you think about it. But the progress is valid, too. We’ve come a long way. My main frustrations are maintenance overhead and that SPAs are overengineering/overkill in many scenarios.

@sil scaffold a blank react app and run tokei on the node-modules dir. Fundamentally, HTML is not designed for highly interactive web apps. To quote Roy Fielding: “Rest is optimized for the common case of the web… large grain hypermedia transfer…” But fielding also gave us the optional code-on-demand constraint to dynamically extend the hypermedia. This is _not_ how SPA frameworks work, but it is exactly why a little library like htmx are so effective. https://sufficiently-advanced.technology/post/third-way-web-development-part-i

@jessitron@hachyderm.io I have to say, you have absolutely _nailed_ what Richard Hamming calls "The essential unity of all knowledge." Which is also why I think Camaratas are so important. Now that I understand "the fundamental interconnectedness of all things" everything I learn is fascinating. For example, this talk helped me better understand the ideas underpinning the semantic web and linked data: https://youtu.be/sDlFaOn71n8 History is a fantastic source of orthogonal illumination!

@jessitron@hachyderm.io Currently, I'm reading "Empire of the Sum: The Rise and Reign of the Pocket Calculator" which begins with ancient counting systems through the various breakthroughs that led to the pocket calculator. Because I'm a dork I bought a slide rule to play with. (I haven't figured out how to use it). I'm also interested in how camaratas encourage cross-pollination of ideas and encourages interdisciplinary thinking and creativity. The idea of putting a lot of smart, curious people together...

@jessitron@hachyderm.io with different mental models and cognitive tools to germinate new ideas and approaches. I have a decade of benefit from the informal camarata that is the NFJS Tour. It's truly remarkable what happens when you put the right people together who all want to grow, learn, and discover. Your "The origins of Opera" remains my all-time favorite tech talk. Did you see Eli Holderness' "Language Games" at craft this year? https://craft-conf.com/2024/talk/language-games

@jessitron@hachyderm.io My gateway drug was "Fire in the Valley" chronicling the history of the PC. That led to reading about Douglas Englebart and Ted Nelson, which took me to Vannevar Bush's essay "As we may think" (1945) I really like all the history of technology as there are so many forgotten ideas that power our lives that we simply take for granted. I also enjoyed Kernighan's "UNIX: A history and a memoir" More broadly I like learning about the creativity that emerges from working under constraints.

I think literally everything is way more complex than we want to pretend it is.

Or, at least all the complex things that all pretend are clear or merely complicated.
