Climate action, sustainability, justice and equality for all. Living off-grid on acreage in southern NSW.

Looking for more ways to opt out of the capitalism that is killing us all. Exploring an ongoing #SpendingStrike - Avoid, Redirect, Postpone - as both a way to fight and a way to strengthen community and resilience for the future.

On Gundungurra country.

She/her/they.

Profile pic is our late beloved tuxedo cat, top banner is part of a quilt made by a relative.

@inthehands Thanks for this. I'm not in the US but I think we may need this perspective in Australia pretty soon. The problems won't be exactly the same here, but the answers will be.

@aram@aoir.social Seems clear at this point that one of the big things that happens is that they get even worse.

#homegrown sunchokes with kale, creamed garlic and chopped hazelnuts, grilled zucchini with feta and dill, and #homehunted venison chops.

@ahimsa_pdx@disabled.social @mewsleah@meow.social @Radgryd@mstdn.games Right? And grammar suggestions. I spent my entire career as a novelist (under another name.) If I wanted my characters to speak or think "ungrammatically" it was FOR A REASON.

@talia_christine@beige.party Yep, I am on a permanent #SpendingStrike where I either avoid (don't spend at all), redirect (spend local, secondhand, small business, etc) or postpone (make things last longer through mending, scraping out containers, etc) as much spending as possible. I love it because in addition to keeping my $$$ away from the worst people, it benefits me and others right now, as well building skills and habits for a future of greater precarity.

@gwynnion@mastodon.social There is one sport where all (human) competitors are on a level playing field with regard to gender, age, expertise and body type, and that's equestrian. I thought it was so cool that my daughter at 15 got to compete directly against Olympic medallists, and occasionally even beat them, because they were competing at a low level on a young, inexperienced horse, as part of its training. Some parents/riders thought it was "unfair" but most didn't. What seemed more "unfair" was that rich kids were competing with $6,000 saddles on hugely expensive horses trained by professional riders, while my daughter was riding an ex-racehorse that she got for free (discarded by its wealthy owner cos it could no longer race.) As you say, all sport can be seen as "unfair" when you look closely at it.

@irisRichardson@mastodon.art @talia_christine@beige.party Yes. That's probably not possible for everything, but for things like homegrown produce it's great. Rediscovering some of those simpler/less corrupted/more community-oriented ways of doing things may also help us in times of scarcity and disruption.

@cmconseils@mastodon.social You can tell all the gardeners on here because we are going, "Do it! Herbs! Strawberries! Start small! It will make the other stuff less overwhelming!" (True) And I will add, a delicious heirloom cherry tomato plant (e.g. Black Cherry) is also a good place to start in pot/balcony food growing.
