🤔Wondering if this year's El Niño will be especially strong? You're not alone! That's why the @maxplanckgesellschaft@wisskomm.social has asked our researcher Daniela Matei to share her expertise on the weather phenomenon in a Q&A. It addresses key concerns about how strong El Niño might become& how much we can already say about this, its potential effects around the globe,& its implications for the coming months. 🔍Take a look below, or find more detailed information on the MPG's webpage: https://www.mpg.de/26855837/faqs-el-nino1

Is this year’s El Niño set to be an especially strong one?

Questions and answers about the El Niño and La Niña climate phenomena. Among other things, the FAQs focus on whether El Niño will be particularly strong in 2026 and what the consequences might be. Daniela Matei from the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology explains the connections.

#UHH
🙌 Es war uns ein Vergnügen!

👏 Congratulations to Clara Bayley on successfully defending her PhD! 🎓

In her thesis, "Design and First Applications of Cleo, a Flexible Superdroplet Model for Warm-Cloud Physics on High-Performance Computers," Clara addresses the challenge of understanding warm tropical clouds. Using Cleo, Clara explored ways to overcome the limitations of traditional cloud microphysics models. ☁️

We’re incredibly proud of her achievement and excited to see what's next for her! ✨

🎓 Congratulations to Eduardo Alastrué de Asenjo on successfully defending his #PhD! 🎉

🌊 In his thesis, @Edu_Alastrue@fediscience.org shows how variability in the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation shapes our climate—in particular, European temperature extremes. Drawing on his expertise in #ClimateModeling, he also examined extremes under net‑zero emissions pathways & contributed to extreme‑event attribution.

We’re proud of you, Edu! What #AMOC-related topic will spark your interest next? 🙌

🗓️ On April 2, 2004, the RAPID observing system started monitoring the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) at 26.5°N. 🌊 Our director Jochem Marotzke was one of the people who proposed it & contributed the theoretical basis for these measurements. 📹 Be sure to check out the video (in German) on the AMOC by the Max Planck Foundation where he explains why targeted observation of the AMOC are indispensable: https://www.maxplanckfoundation.org

A new way to understand #clouds ☁️ 🌧️🌦️ ⛈️ Our ability to model cloud microphysics is one of the key uncertainties in Global #Climate #Models. That's why #MPI_Scientist Clara Bayley et al. have created a new model for warm-cloud microphysics, Cleo. 🥳 🥳 Cleo is a type of "superdroplet" model, a radically different, more fundamental way for modeling cloud microphysics.💧 Sounds cool, right? Cleo: the fundamental design of a new superdroplet model for high computational performance (v0.39.0)

Abstract. Cleo is a novel implementation of the Super-Droplet Method (SDM) aiming to be efficient on and portable across exascale high-performance computers. It is motivated by the need to develop a SDM that can model warm-cloud microphysics in domains large enough to resolve shallow mesoscale cloud organisation 𝒪(100 km). This paper introduces Cleo

🌊 The North Atlantic significantly influences the weather in Europe. For instance, a cold spell in the subpolar North Atlantic can lead to a heat wave in Europe. 🔥 In a new study by @geomar_de@helmholtz.social & #MPIM, Julian Krüger et al. show that climate models represent this relationship much more realistically when ocean dynamics are resolved in sufficient detail. 📚 https://www.nature.com/articles/s43247-025-03145-9

🌊 Measurements of #CO2 dissolved in the ocean surface are essential to quantify the marine #carbon sink, but data is scarce.
⛵️ #MPIM researcher Jacqueline Behncke et al. investigated if measurements taken on board sailing boats can fill in the blank spots. They found that with existing data, the marine carbon sink is underestimated, but 2 more circumnavigations already improve the estimate. 📖 https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/sciadv.adz1502

🌬️❓How are the frequency, strength, and trajectories of storms in the #GermanBight going to change under #GlobalWarming? A study by Daniel Krieger (#MPIM) & Ralf Weisse (@hereon@helmholtz.social) reveals that most current climate models predict a decrease in #storm activity in the future. However, when storms do occur, they may be more severe than today. One possible explanation is a change in storm tracks, but this needs to be investigated further.

CMIP6 multi-model assessment of Northeast Atlantic and German Bight storm activity

Abstract. We assess the evolution of Northeast Atlantic and German Bight storm activity using both model simulations and observational data. Our analysis includes the CMIP6 multi-model ensemble and the Max Planck Institute Grand Ensemble (MPI-GE) under CMIP6 forcing, evaluated across historical forcing and three future emission scenarios. Storm activity is quantified via upper percentiles of geostrophic wind speeds, derived from horizontal gradients of mean sea-level pressure. Observational data

How will #ClimateChange affect the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ)?🌧️ 🌡️ According to long-term projections, the #ITCZ will narrow due to #GlobalWarming. However, it has shown signs of expansion. #MPIM researchers Jiayu Zhang&Sarah Kang resolved this using a virtual experiment w/ the MPI-ESM #ClimateModel. They show that the ITCZ responds to increased CO2 by initial expansion&long-term contraction. The current widening could persist for several more decades.↔️ 🔗:https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/sciadv.aef2833 ©️NASA
