🌀🌊This week, an international team set off aboard #METEOR for an expedition along the west coast of Africa, led by the GEOMAR.
The expedition focuses on two poorly understood phenomena: the Benguela upwelling system off the coasts of Angola and Namibia, which partly operates independently of the wind, and the recurring marine heatwaves known as Benguela Niños, which have a significant impact on the local climate and cause flooding in Angola and Namibia.

The renewal of deep waters in the North Atlantic has slowed markedly over the past three decades. This is shown by a new study from GEOMAR, now published in the scientific journal Nature Communications.
The study demonstrates that the “age” of water masses in the North Atlantic has been increasing continuously since the 1990s – an indication of a weakening of the Atlantic circulation system.

Plankton Bloom in the Labrador Sea
The research cruise MSM142 set off with MARIA S. MERIAN from Greenland. The expedition combines research on the spring bloom in the Labrador Sea with long-term observations of large current systems.

How does gold form deep within the Earth, and why does it concentrate specifically along volcanic island arcs?
A study led by GEOMAR shows, using the Kermadec island arc in the South Pacific as an example, that multi-stage melting processes in a hydrous mantle drive the enrichment of gold in magmas. These findings help to explain why many of the world’s richest gold deposits are associated with subduction zones.

The ocean may have absorbed significantly more CO2 than previously calculated.
A new study by GEOMAR and Plymouth Marine Laboratory shows that the exchange of gases between air and sea is not symmetric, and that the global ocean has taken up around 15 per cent more CO2 than suggested by conventional estimates. In windy regions, air bubbles entrained by breaking waves substantially enhance the uptake of CO2.

An international research group led by GEOMAR set out yesterday aboard the research vessel METEOR to record the state of the Mediterranean Sea as part of a time series.
The measuring stations range from Cyprus to Greece, Italy and Spain to the Strait of Gibraltar. Among other things, temperature, salinity, nutrients and trace gases are being investigated, as well as the stratification and circulation of the water masses.

"Making the Invisible Visible" 🦪

How a shifting plate boundary and hot mantle material formed one of the largest canyons in the ocean. ⛰️🌊
An international research team led by the GEOMAR has now shown that the so-called “Grand Canyon of the Atlantic” was formed around 37 to 24 million years ago through the interplay of a temporarily existing plate boundary and an early branch of the Azores mantle plume.
