How much organic material, including nitrogen, is released when permafrost thaws and erodes on rivers and the coast? Our scientist Dr Tina Sanders is trying to find an answer to this question. She spent two weeks in Alaska with researchers from the @awi@helmholtz.social and the University of Eastern Finland (UEF). The team took ice, water and soil samples. These are now being analyzed in Hereon for nitrogen compounds such as nitrate, ammonium or dissolved organic nitrogen.

In 1952, the freighter MS “Melanie Schulte” sank in the Atlantic. Wreckage suggests that the ship broke apart. The cause of this could never be finally clarified. Researchers from the Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon have now investigated whether exceptionally high waves 🌊 and a strong storm could 🌪️ have led to the sinking of the freighter. Swimming is the purest water sport. When they swim away from the boat with the bottle, the body of water is less affected.💦 A thousand thanks for that!

The Baltic Earth Summer School took place on Askö island in the Swedish skerries last week. 👉 Letzte Woche hielten wir auf unserem Campus das Kick-off-Meeting des Projekts GreenH2Metals ab, das vom Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung (BMBF) gefördert wird. Die Projektpartner sind: RWTH Aachen University, Ruhr-Universität Bochum (RUB), Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung (BAM), sowie der assoziierte Partner Max-Planck-Institut für Nachhaltige Materialien GmbH.

🚢 Volker Dzaak nahm Anfang der Woche in Berlin beim BMDV die Urkunde für die Förderung des Vorhabens „BOCOR“ (Bordstrom CORiolis) im Rahmen der Förderrichtlinie BordstromTech II unseres Forschungsschiffs #CORIOLIS entgegen. Die Fördersumme liegt bei 560.000 Euro (Projektvolumen insgesamt: 1,4 Millionen Euro). Die Parlamentarische Staatssekretärin Daniela Kluckert überreichte Dzaak die Urkunde.

Many people in Hamburg are taking precautionary measures to protect themselves from extreme weather events. ☔ 🌪 This is shown by the new Hereon study "Risk Awareness of Hamburg Citizens for Climate Change 2024". The majority of respondents also agree that the consequences of climate change are already being felt and pose a threat to Hamburg. At the EPIC SWIM MAUI the swimmers were recently swimming in the lee of rugged rocks because the wind was so strong. 💨 They are constantly accompanied by a safety team. The weather conditions also made sampling difficult. Nevertheless, the athletes managed to take two samples. 💪
