OK Mastodon and the larger fediverse, I have succumbed to your charms and have been taking pictures of #fungi. These were found on aging woodpiles in central Alberta in the beginning of the foothills, well east of the Rockies. A fungi-id app identified the vertical facing ones as puffballs, whereas the downward facing ones were identified as ‘Turkey Tail’. I’m assuming they are the same species, any thoughts?

@Daveography@yeg.bike That makes a lot of sense- they didn’t QUITE look or fly like Canada Geese, and the call was for sure different. They were surely taking off in a panic-type situation, and I don’t think anything would scare a Canada Goose.

So when in Rocky Mountain House, one should visit Rocky Mountain Bike N Board. And you should listen to Loyal when he tells you of a gravel path out to the Historic Site, What a great little ride! Some paved, some single track, some grass, and to a Historical Fort site! Also you should heed his advice as to what local restaurants are good. We have yet to check that out, but we look forward to tonight’s supper. Rocky Mountain House is a charming town, but the local cuisine is largely the usual franchises. Copper Creek Cafe & Mercantile being a fine local establishment that has it going on. #yegbike #yeg #bikepacking

#yegbike commute: pleasantly cool at +13° with mild northwest wind. Paths still full of branches, twigs, and a few stubborn puddles and muddy patches. Street life in the inner city mostly under tarps with one campfire. Traffic medium weekday light, none too annoying. No songbirds out, just ducks and gulls. A few rabbits. Paths mostly empty, a few regular other bike commuters. Fairly ideal ride. #earworm ‘You Turn Me On, I’m A Radio’, Joni Mitchell. Don’t know why the mental radio is playing the old favourites. Better than the Nickelback a week ago.

#yegbike commute: a little on the warm side at +14°C with negligible wind in overcast skies. Paths mostly good and dry, still muddy in patches, particularly around the low level bridge, and of course branches and twigs all over. Mosquitoes still out, but slightly less than before. Inner city mostly absent, a few people and bike commuters on the paths. Traffic light but medium annoying. #earworm still ‘Falling Slowly’, RIP Glen Hansard.

#yegbike commute: a lovely temperature of +8°C with no wind. Surfaces mostly dry, some puddles and a bit of muddy gravel. Traffic still quite light. Paths had the regular joggers and dog walkers, a few bike commuters. Took the downtown route, sad to see the east side of High Level still closed. No new birds, less songbirds than a few weeks ago. #earworm ‘Powder Finger’, Neil Young

Was delighted to see the 'shared streets' program being set up in #yeg once more. I was worried that the rumoured upcoming anti-bike lane legislation from the UCP would hamper this program.
I can say that the Saskatchewan Drive and Calgary Trail contra-flow lanes have been set up. At least one more summer for #yegbike and alternate mobility modes!

Took a 4 hour #bikepacking trip to Miquelon Lakes Campground. Section roads that were mostly paved and not too busy, secondary highways the same.
Didn’t expect such luxurious accommodation in the ‘Comfort Camping’ Yurt! Of course we brought enough camping equipment for every season. All we needed to bring was bedding and groceries.
This might be the best and well equipped Yurt we have stayed at in the Americas and Europe - in our anecdotal experience and very small sample size.
Full sized refrigerator, fancy propane BBQ, good kitchen equipment, coffee pod maker with pods.
Yurt has a moon/roof, and this is a dark sky preserve, so I’m looking forward to that.
So far, so great.
#yegbike and environs.
#bikepacking but not that self-sufficient this trip

#yegbike commute: again, hot & muggy at +13°C with slight northwest wind. Paths freshly puddled, wet branches and gravel/mud patches keep one mindful. Inner city present but subdued, maybe most in their sidewalk tents. Traffic again light, really nice. Paths mostly empty, the few regular bike commuters on their own journeys. Songbirds not too much in voice, perhaps it was the coyote who seemed quite okay communing with me, from a safe distance. With the coyote, No Regrets. Bringing to mind a Joni Mitchell #earworm

There will not be regular #yegbike commute reports until June. We will be camping in Miquelon Lake for the week, hopefully catching bird migration season.
Pictured is some of the food we are packing along, one of my favourite aspects of #bikepacking - eating essentially the same foodstuffs, but portable camping versions. Cooking them outside makes them taste even better.
Miquelon Lake offers a Yurt, complete with refrigerator, so this trip we have the luxury of bringing more than dry goods.

#yegbike commute: temperature is +9°C, and it’s still raining, at times heavily. Paths are full of deep puddles, bits of trees and gravel on the paths. But those paths were mostly empty, and the streets quite light of traffic.
Wind is less, that’s something, as are the birds chirping.

#yegbike commute: even with a temperature of +10°C, it’s a cool, grey and miserable day. Medium gusty wind from the northwest, light but omnipresent rain.
Surfaces damp with puddles, but not too bad on gravel tires. Traffic medium and mostly respectful. Not many people about, a few other bikes.
Could be worse conditions, but not as bad as the last few days. Back to the grind.
#earworm ‘Miracles’, Fleetwood Mac.
The few songbirds out in voice made my morning possible.

There was a #yegbike commute this morning, but there seems to be some tech issues.
Anyway, it was above zero and slight southwest wind. Surfaces on paths and roads mostly dry, some puddles but blessedly still in liquid form (state?).
Traffic medium busy and medium annoying.
Not many people out and about on the paths, but I did have an interesting interaction.
I was at a traffic circle, and so was looking in the distance for oncoming hidden cars. At the crosswalk, a pedestrian darted out in front of me. They were camouflaged and quite short, so I didn’t see them earlier - they were a coyote. I should have yielded right of way, I think, but Inwas caught by surprise. I need to check the bylaw or traffic acts to see if yielding right of way applies only to humans. Offhand, I don’t think it mentions species of pedestrians.
#earworm is ‘Breakdown’ by Tom Perry & The Heartbreakers, but I substitute the lyrics to ‘Ballad Of John & Yoko’ for the words I don’t know.

#yegbike commute: quite warm at +15°C with slight northwest breeze. Paths full of little branches, and many many puddles. Paths mostly empty, perhaps the dog walkers and joggers are avoiding the clouds of mosquitoes. They are legion. Traffic light, the riding itself was not too bad. Smokey skies have an obscured orange sun in the sky. A warm and muggy ride, but overall good. Not many songbirds singing, hopefully they are busy eating mosquitoes. #earworm ‘Tokyo’, Bruce Cockburn. #yegbike commute: quite comfortable temperature of +8°C with a lighter northwest wind than yesterday. Surfaces good, fair amount of walkers, joggers and other bikes on the paths.
Took the High Level Bridge and then 113th Street up to Kingsway and then Princess Elizabeth Avenue. Nice to have proper separated bike route most of the way, at the expense of 4 extra minutes over the 96th Street route. Not sure if 4 minutes is worth skipping the Grierson Hill climb.
Anyway, songbirds were more present than yesterday, certainly on the old airport site.
Traffic still noticeably light.
Quite ideal riding conditions overall.

#yegbike commute: good temperature of +7°C but medium gusty northwest wind cools things down, and discombobulates my mind. Nevertheless serenity prevailed. At the expense of some mindfulness. Taking mostly bike paths does that. A few early morning riders on those paths, as well as some pedestrians. Inner city fairly subdued.
Traffic light, that is quite easy to get used to. I hope it’s more than the price of gas. But I’m sure that’s the reason.
Songbirds at medium level, but quite welcome.

Traffic light and well behaved. Few walkers on the paths, bike commuters back on their rides.
Some inner city action on Boyle Street, the campfires are back with questionable fuel sources.
Quite ideal riding conditions.
Songbirds out in full voice- chickadees, robins, starlings, and red-winged blackbirds. Had to dodge geese in the Greisbach pond routes.

#yegbike commute; just below zero 0°C with slight northwest wind makes for a great ride. Surfaces mostly good, bare and dry. Sun coming up on the morning commute is appreciated. Also watching the geese try and swim on a frozen pond quite amusing.
Traffic light, not many people about.
I do hope we get a lovely spring like this lasting more than a few days.

If you ever want to go for a good road bike ride, a holiday morning is the time to do it. Only a few cars about, mostly had the streets to myself. And the few other walkers.

And accompanied by one guy who alternated between bassoon, clarinet, flute, and Mellotron Strings. What a fantastic set.https://www.madisoncunningham.com/ #cfmf

So the R&R Motel in Camrose has a breakfast spread about as good as the wacko weirdo motel in Ponoka. Maybe not quite as much omelets and tater tots, but had breakfast burritos, much more to my taste. The other place did have instant espresso powder (which I think I was the first to use) so I could beef up the coffee. We have the aeropress back in the room.

#yegbike larger area musings, Camrose edition: Coming into town, I had been texting with my daughter about family business. (No texting while cycling, there were many rest breaks). I mentioned that in this long slog of a ride; I was thinking a lot about Boston Pizza for supper. The kidlet has some connections in Camrose, so she asked them to recommend some independent food places. Prime Fried Chicken was the winner, and we had a great supper there. I forgot to add that we had come across great concentrations of Canada Geese in some of the wetlands. Like 2 or 3 hundred. They took off in great murmurations - I didn’t know they did that. I also didn’t recognize their call, they make a different call when doing that, I guess. Also this motel is better equipped, much more comfortable, and way friendlier than the one in Ponoka - and cheaper! #bikepacking #yeg #cobrachicken

But mostly dry surfaces. Took the High Level Bridge for safety, will check out Low Level underpass on the way home. Traffic medium light, not too annoying.
