The old man
must have stopped our car
two dozen times to climb out
and gather into his hands
the small toads blinded
by our lights and leaping,
live drops of rain.

The rain was falling,
a mist about his white hair
and I kept saying
you can’t save them all
accept it, get back in,
we’ve got places to go.

But, leathery hands full
of wet brown life
knee deep in the summer
roadside grass
he just smiled and said
they have places to go
too.

Inspired by her own garden and her visit to Monet's gardens at Giverny, textile artist Kathrin Marchenko created a large 110 x 280 centimeters thread painting, 'Nymphéas Beyond', in which water and plants seem to become one.

Voracious reader, book collector, and scholar Ignacio Sánchez Prado writes about how he began collecting books when growing up in Mexico, and why it was and is so important to him to develop his working library. He takes an interesting look at the future or not of such libraries and of how they relate to scholarship. #books #libraries #reading #bookstodonhttps://pghrev.com/a-library-on-the-eve-of-packing/

What is a word? — Depends on who you ask. For instance, in the rigid Flemish taal, so many things that feel like words don’t pass, and my sprung language doesn’t work at al. My sentences are yet another place where stringent rule-embracers don’t agree: to me, an error shows the second face of grammar. The mistakes are what I mean. The thing I value most in any line— drawn, made, wrote, thought; in fantasy or fact— is flexibility: that, like a spine, the art supports the mind by which it’s maked. What use is language flattened, dried in books? Our language lives most when it is mistook. ~~ 'Sonnet for the Second-Language Speaker' by Éireann Lorsung from 'Pattern-book' #FridayPoem #TodaysPoem #poetry @poetry@fedigroups.social

"The spaces are organised into thematic rooms that reflect the layout of the original library and evoke the main areas of Eco's thought." Sigh. It would be wonderful to visit and tour the newly opened Umberto Eco library at the University of Bologna where he taught for many years. So far it contains 32,000 of his books from his home and study in Milan, the rest of his books from his country house are yet to be added. Eco's way of organizing his books is preserved in the library. #libraries #books #UmbertoEco @bookstodon@fedigroups.social https://magazine.unibo.it/en/articles/eco-library-opens-in-bologna

And so I celebrate the end of the winter festivals because it promises not just the light returning but also that the darkness will come back to be illuminated by words. -- from 'Winter' by Val McDermid

When ball
moss falls
we feel
most at
a loss
to explain
why this
soft bomb
of sticks
and fine
jade colored
fronds loud
with naught
drops to
us: does
the tree
let the
moss go
or does
the tree
ask us
to hold
the moss?

The aspen glitters in the wind.
And that delights us.

The leaf flutters, turning,
Because that motion in the heat of summer
Protects its cells from drying out. Likewise the leaf
Of the cottonwood.

The gene pool threw up a wobbly stem
And the tree danced. No.
The tree capitalized.
No. There are limits to saying,
In language, what the tree did.

It is good sometimes for poetry to disenchant us.

Dance with me, dancer. Oh, I will.

Aspens doing something in the wind.

"But the Earth is an unstable stone on which its occupants are planted. It must be tended with care, or else it will rebel. Our rock tells us when it’s hurt or yearning, and we must listen. Otherwise, one morning we may find it no longer wants to revolve." -- from 'The Archive of Alternate Endings' by Lindsey Drager

Detroit, Michigan is the pilot location for an initiative by environmental groups working together to preserve the genetics of California's oldest giant sequoias by cloning them and planting the saplings outside of their native habitat. Because of the wildfires that rip through California annually, several historic groves have already been destroyed and the species is at risk.

For years I lived as if my life were made of clay or wood or even stone, and all I had to do—“all”— was mold or whittle or chisel to change its shape. As if my life were calling out from inside a larger hunk of raw material, of potential living. As if the shape existed, and my work was to reveal it. For years I lived like that. Imagine the absurdity of taking a chisel to water, or trying to sculpt it with your hands. This is what a life is: water. The work is letting it fill the spaces it runs to; letting it flow around or through the rest. Yes, it glistens as silver as a blade, and yes, it can drill through stone, but it’s soft to the touch. A life does what water does: It goes. ~~ 'For years I lived' by Maggie Smith from 'A Suite or a Suitcase' #VerseThursday #TodaysPoem #poetry @poetry@fedigroups.social
