Hollywood liberal, Bollinger bolshevik, choose your favorite pejorative. Turn-ons include film/TV, music, civil rights, architecture, cars, travel, food, gin martinis. Turn-offs include broccoli, bigots and spectacularly awful people like some billionaires who come to mind. He/Him.

I’ve lived in Beverly Hills on and off since I was a little kid—most recently most of the 2010s—and stay subscribed to texts because a lot of them amuse me. Like this one that just arrived. Phew!

Oh, the neck of the guitar will be lights. So, while it’s probable you can still see Trump from the bottom of the Strip, the lights will at least partially obstruct his name at night.

On the drunken theme, the Eldorado Brougham came with a bar in its glovebox that featured magnetized tumblers. No real surprise for the era. My grandparents drove drunk all the time -- Mom remembers how they'd sometimes, late at night after a party, think Lake Tahoe sounded fun, so they'd load all the kids in the car and drive up. Totally loaded. It's amazing they all survived.

Haven’t told this DC story in a while. A personal mystery that was only solved decades after the fact when I saw a Netflix documentary. Anyway, my very social parents, always meeting people and always wanting us to have interesting experiences, didn’t even blink when they met some senator somewhere who—when they heard they had a teenage son—instantly invited me to Washington for a week. Suddenly I was on a plane to DC, not really knowing why I was going or even, really, who was hosting me.

At something recently, one of my cousin’s cousins—hadn’t seen her in 20 years probably—looked me up and down as she walked toward me and said: ‘WE GOT OLD!’ It’s funny arriving at a venue for an ‘80s band because that’s EXACTLY how I feel looking around at all my fellow Gen Xers haha.

There was an Esquire article back in 2010 that @billyjoebowers@mastodon.online recalled in which they investigated the actual sizes of jeans at various retailers. I can’t find it online, but this is ABC riffing on it.

And I’ll admit I was maybe more excited about the fine print—hosted by Richard Blade—than the supporting acts. He was a KROQ DJ when I was a kid and hugely influential in shaping my taste and knowledge of music. I kept satellite radio waaaaaaay longer than I would’ve just because he still DJ’d on First Wave haha.

Trying trunks on early this afternoon and I'm like the opposite of those guys who bench-press a thousand pounds but have skinny legs. No intention here. It's really only that I'm an active guy who walks a lot. Please just don't expect anything like this when I take my shirt off haha.

I recall being told as a kid in the ‘70s that Mercedes-Benz handle design—like my 1973 450 SLC—was a safety feature: Doors could be pulled open by rescuers.

Being conscious of this is why Tesla-style designs have always made me nervous—that’s even before all the electronic nonsense.

Continuing my tradition of the least manly injuries possible. (I fractured my wrist flying a kite, for instance.)

Managed to gash my shin this weekend on the corner of a chaise longue haha.

Good golly, I’m seeing a theme as I scroll through Top Gear’s list of the 50 most bonkers American cars: They need a photo editor who knows something about cars. This is one of the early and outstanding GTOs—not the later model described here.

These were my totals yesterday—pretty typical for me. But I know I’m unusually active: pacing on the phone, taking long daily constitutionals and preferring to walk if I can get somewhere without driving. It’s as much for my mental health as anything—clears my head, helps me think, etc—and also something I just enjoy doing. And I have available HOURS every day to do it. So, I don’t give myself any extra points for it haha.

Related: Because I'd only ever known Julie London as a middle-aged nurse on EMERGENCY! I was genuinely shocked when I learned as an adult that her real claim to fame was as a va-va-voom torch singer.

Thinking about vanity sizing and it’s funny because I’m not comforted by something I don’t believe to be true. I take a 4 in Lacoste shorts/trunks—their way of saying medium—and, being French and all, they’re the ones who’ve stayed closest to original sizing in my experience. So, if you’re putting me in a smaller ‘size’ than Lacoste I de facto know it’s bullshit. Also, ‘small’ isn’t probably quite the same ego boost for men that it is for women haha.

@ApostateEnglishman@mastodon.world @wendinoakland@beige.party I just wish sometimes that a reporter could/would press Trump on a simple line of questioning like: 'Please tell us something -- anything -- insightful about Iran?' I'll bet the man STILL couldn't pick it out on a map.

Good golly—reminding me of a similar break under Sunset Boulevard several miles west between UCLA and the Bel-Air Country Club. Also so big it took forever to fix. This intersection has been incredibly important in my life. That small yellow sign to the left is Book Soup and the building with Supreme logos—directly across the street—used to be Tower Records.

@YakyuNightOwl@mastodon.world Something that makes me crazy about this whole DEI thing is that corporations weren’t even doing it out of the goodness of their hearts. It was good business! Attract and retain the best talent. One of the best QEDs for MAGA’s sheer bigotry is how much of their agenda is anti-business—not a best practice in sight.

OH NO! You must go and order the garlic noodles before Crustacean closes for good. Fucking property developers.

(The noodles are remarkably cheap but be aware—if the server casually asks if you want prawns—that the price will more than triple haha.)

I read Dave Wakeling sometimes adds General Public tunes to his English Beat set list. (If you’re British, it’s a bit like a Yazoo/Yaz situation, the Beat were called English Beat here.) I’ll bliss out if he does ‘Never You Done That’—not quite Alison Moyet doing ‘Midnight’ bliss levels but close.

A funny thing about growing up around famous people is how often you’d see these amazing women dating or marrying such schlubs. Thinking I might have a chance—generally—wasn’t so much about misplaced confidence as just knowing reasonably handsome nice guys compared well to most of the men who pursued them.

Spring Session M had so many bangers. Of course ‘Walking in LA’ was so goddamn clever. (Nobody walks in LA, only a nobody walks in LA.) And my favorite track is generally unknown to anyone who isn’t specifically a Missing Persons fan: ‘Noticeable One’ I’ve probably seen Missing Persons (mostly Dale Bozzio performing as Missing Persons) more times than any other act. I was hooked from the moment KROQ started playing the hell outta ‘Mental Hopscotch’ before they even had a record deal.

The real joy of that picture is how much fun everyone's clearly having. And I love MacLaine's short scene. That Cadillac they pull up in is, by the way, an extraordinarily expensive Eldorado Brougham. Priced like a Rolls-Royce when they built just over 700 total in '57 and '58. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z4Q8gBgvDBI

Dave Wakeling did do ‘Tenderness’ so I DID get a partial General Public fix, too. Thought it was going to be the Real Housewife in front of me—drunk off her ass before the show even started—who’d be annoying me all night. (There’s always someone near me at a concert who does.) But it was actually the perfectly nice woman seated to my left—otherwise impeccably groomed—who was very overdue for a shampoo. The overwhelming scent of someone’s oily hair for four hours was not on my bingo card!

I’m sometimes shocked when remarketing is so profoundly decoupled from everything a brand should know about me.

Yes, I clicked on these trunks. But they are available only in a 40 waist when I never purchase anything but medium or 34.
