Bill C-12 passed while Bills C-8, C-9, and S-209 passed their first chambers and are rapidly progressing through their second chambers. If these bills weren't bad enough, the Canadian government is trying to rush a bill that's essentially the United States' FISA and CLOUD Act rolled into one: C-22, the Lawful Access Act. C-22's guardrails protecting encryption are extremely flimsy and easily bypassed (i.e. the definition of a "systematic vulnerability" won't be legally defined until after the bill is passed). Please call your Senators and House of Commons Reps ASAP! Apparently, Massachusetts, a blue state, is trying to fast track a "Social Media Safety" bill that's about as restrictive as the one currently in effect in Florida (mandates AV, bans anyone under 14 from social media, requires giving a birth certificate to verify parental consent, requires enormous amounts of data collection, and the bill's definition of a social media site is so broad that it would include sites like Wikipedia and The Trevor Project). Massachusetts state lawmakers are even aware of the comparisons to the Florida bill and the legal challenges to that bill.

It's like, if you're aware that your bill is likely to be met with a mountain of legal challenges, amend it or better yet: don't pass it! I guess they're so arrogant they're like, "Nah, we'd win!" If you live in Massachusetts, please contact your state senators and representatives ASAP!

@Tutanota Unfortunately, I think this letter will fall upon deaf ears. As we've learned from their response to the OSA repeal petition, their response to any criticism of these laws is to 1: Glaze said laws 2: Imply critics of the laws are sex pests/pedophiles/etc. and 3: Enact even more fascist legislation. The UK Government (and I'm sure plenty of other governments) is willing to die on the hill of these thinly veiled mass surveillance/censorship laws. They won't stop unless the courts/a future parliament/a general strike forces them to. Because enacting a fascist police state is just too good to pass up. On comparatively better state level AV bill news:

The Governor of Wisconsin vetoed an Age Verification bill that passed both of the state's chambers. This bill would have required hard identifiers (ex: Government ID) for Age Verification.

The governor seems to be in favor of a device based age verification solution similar to what California, Colorado, and Illinois are doing.

So, it's not good, but it's better than requiring hard identifiers.

NEW BAD BILL ALERT:

New York's government is trying to rush through a bill that is very similar to bills like OSA and KOSA: Stop Online Predators Act (S4609/A6549). The bill passed committee in the Senate early last month which means a floor vote might not be too far behind.

New York is a highly influential state. If a law passes there, there is an increased chance other states will pass similar bills. This could be a domino effect and lead to KOSA and similar federal level bills passing.

The bill's primary sponsor, Andrew Gounardes, is two-timing backstabber. He used to be pro-privacy but now is all in on mass censorship and surveillance. He barely tries to hide it in his videos promoting the bill.

Please call your State Senators and Assembly Members ASAP!

They're about curbing the freedoms of communication and congregation that the internet offers. Constant surveillance and the fear of being watched is an essential element of societies of control. And Christian Fundamentalism, which basically every single one of these thinly veiled internet surveillance bills have been in service of, is very much about creating and maintaining a society of control. The right to privacy and freedom of association are in direct opposition to the goals of Christian Fundamentalists. Especially when that right to privacy and freedom of association involve any kind of sexual liberation. Overall, if governments actually cared about protecting minors/women, they'd be doing the following for starters: -Enacting comprehensive privacy policy -Educating parents on how to use existing safety tools and improving said tools where needed -Actually enforcing existing anti-trust laws -Enacting proper regulation towards GenAI (chatbots, media-generation, etc.) -Holding Epstein's associates accountable instead of nervously twiddling their thumbs when asked

Americans! Updates on "Internet Safety" bills: -Hawley and Durbin are trying to sneak the unconstitutional STOP CSAM Act into the FY27 NDAA. Hawley allegedly managed to get it included it in the manager's amendment. This means it has a higher chance than previous attempts at being successful. -Still, there's procedural roadblocks that the bill has to clear to survive until the final passage. The manager's amendment is reserved for uncontroversial amendments. -The Senate Commerce Committee has scheduled a markup for KOSA and the SCREEN Act for Wednesday, August 5th. There are other bills, but they're far less problematic than KOSA and the SCREEN Act. -Senate KOSA's fate in the House is still quite uncertain. The same goes for the KIDS Act's fate in the Senate. -The SCREEN Act's approval among Democrats is unknown at the moment.
