I only today figured out I can scroll a live feed of just the #forkiverse and I'm happier for it. I am not a power user here. Obvi.

I'm 89 days sober today. About two months ago, dissatisfied with the sobriety trackers out there, I vibe coded my own using Claude Code to help me. I'm not a coder. But we made a cool app that I use for my own sobriety and the app is like having a really supportive quiet robot friend who is looking after my days. I'm ambivalent about using Claude. More to follow. Here's what the app home screen looks like. I'm thinking of putting it on the Google app store for free. Ambivalent about that too.
I'm having my first experience reading Robert Coover. I started with The Public Burning. It's an absolute knockout. I'm a little over halfway through. I wonder if anyone out there has read this and what your experience was like. Keep in mind I'm midway through. The subject(s) couldn't be more timely. #robertcoover #thepublicburning #bookstodon
The Public Burning by Robert Coover
This is an extremely ambitious and wildly insane book. It's kind of like Dickens and Twain and LSD and vaudeville smashed together in the Large Hadron. I'm thrilled to have had the experience of reading it. And I'm left wondering how it ever got written and what Robert Coover was really like.
Great book. Crazy book. Timely as ever.
#forkiverse denizens, this reminder about the wonders of RSS might have transformed my digital life today. So grateful for Cory Doctorow.
Network Effect by Martha Wells
A Murderbot Novel
What an exciting addition to the Murderbot series - a full length novel!
I've read the first four novellas in order and this fifth one in the series was a terrific book which eclipsed them all except for maybe the first one, because how can anything be better than that?
Martha Wells writes action really well and navigates the fascinating terrain of Murderbot's pysche expertly.
Finding myself very heartbroken over the news of the death of Glen Hansard. If you don't know his music, he's incredible. What a loss.
I counted one woman visible in this clip.
I took my foot off the gas a little in March. Still, I'm happy to have read these four diverting books.
I went on a bender with Murderbot and finished up with a classic tale of murder murder murder (and murder).

The Maltese Falcon by Dashiell Hammett
I think April needs to lighten up a little. Less sarcasm&cynicism, more sincerity&hope.
The Murderbot Diaries: Exit Strategy by Martha Wells
#4 in the series was a hoot. Taken as a while, it's been a blast relaxing with these slim volumes while the world goes to complete shit and while I stare down my next reads.
If I were in charge of doing a Season 2 for the Apple show, I'd condense #2 and #3 into a two or three episode set up for #4 to take up the majority of a ten episode run.
Exit Strategy was a worthy follow up to the original book. Loved it.
It is taking me my entire life to understand that I'm not very good at friendship. I'm a kind person, I can be a great friend, but I just don't do friendship very well because I don't want to bother anybody. I suppose I don't understand why people would want me around. It's a terrible place to be intellectually, mentally. I should work on it.
I've been breezing along with my latest reading choices and just this morning one of my library ebook holds opened up:
The Books of Jacob by Olga Tokarczuk
I've been incredibly taken by other books by this esteemed writer and this book has a reputation for excellence. Duh. Nobel Prize winning writer and all.
Lol. Just found out it's almost 1,000 pages long.
Well, here we go!
Winter is nearing its end and so my voracious reading will come to an end too. I read 16 books over Jan and Feb and three in March. My writing needs to take priority over reading and house projects and work will probably edge out my writing. I've been struggling mentally and intellectually for at least half a year and I'm doing my best to stay out of complete darkness. Slowly and consistently, I've been getting back to an exercise regimen and that is huge. Onward. #writing #bookstodon #fitness
Bright I Burn by Molly Aitken
This is one of those books that you just have to read. While it might not be everyone's cup of tea, I loved it. It's up there among my favorites I've read this year. Molly Aitken has a long terrific future ahead of her as a storyteller.
My advice is, if you read a synopsis of the book first, just forget it when you read the book. It creates a false impression of what the book truly is. (Luckily I had forgotten the synopsis.)
I want to go on the record.*
I am opposed to genocide. What the Trump administration is doing is unconscionable, illegal, immoral, heinous.
*Just in case they drag the entirety of the US citizenry to the Hague.
Hey #bookstodon and #bookclub friends, I read a good batch of books in May.
Several Short Sentences About Writing by Verlyn Klinkenborg

Tenth of December by George Saunders

It occurred to me, while thinking about predicted future devastating climate change outcomes, that all of the best zombie movies, like all good speculative art, have been preparing us for the days ahead when millions - billions - will be struggling for survival, attempting to breach the walls of fortified retreats the . 01% have hidden themselves within, seeking anything to eat, maybe even including brains.
Horses could walk on their hind legs and stand ten feet tall if they wished, but they choose not to in order to avoid stooping through doorways.
@Pepijn@mastodon.online They had the brazenness to say this while using advanced technology that for some people is financially out of reach. Lol.
I guess, I'm just wondering, WHY THE HELL DIDN'T THIS GET INVESTIGATED?
