From this week's E-Sylum: " New Semiquincentennial Medal Commemorates the First Submarine Used in Combat"

https://www.coinbooks.org/v29/esylum_v29n30.html#article22

The first submarine used in combat was the US Revolutionary War submarine Turtle. A new medal honoring the Turtle has been created by Jim Licaretz.

And if you like submarine history, I wrote some, and shared some links in writing up the "2014 Centenary of Military Aviation & Submarines PNC":

Happy third birthday to the first post on the site! Posted on the 24th July 2023. It is about a medallion of Saint Eligius: the patron saint of numismatics! Very fitting. The post itself is short, only 116 words if you include the title. The image description for the three images is longer! (at 128 words): https://coinofnote.com/saint-eligius-medallion/

The other post I have on the site about Saint Eligius has a little more on our patron: https://coinofnote.com/saint-eligius/

Ok since I was a day behind yesterday, let's stick with that - here's a #TokenTuesday piece! (whatever day it happens to be for you).

TV Game Use, looks like: https://en.numista.com/534571 this one has 44 counterstamped on it. I had made a note to myself:

From Numista thread: https://en.numista.com/forum/topic97255.html China game token.

代用币:Token Before year 2000,play video games through the TV screen, so it's also called TV Game. - that thread has a couple of other variants.

Does anyone have any more info on these please?

Today's E-Sylum has a piece about the Zoo coinage of Gallienus: https://www.coinbooks.org/v29/esylum_v29n29.html#article16

I've written up a couple of these coins previously myself: https://coinofnote.com/gallienus-stag-rome-267/

and https://coinofnote.com/cut-gallienus-antelope/

E-Sylum has more of the background and some nice examples!

Ok who needs some #MondayMotivation? Even those of us for whom it is already Tuesday? Here are two #MondayMedal pieces you can take your pick from:

A) I can do it!

or, if jumping between cliffs seems a bit much for this early in the week, how about:

B) Self-care is essential.

Are you team A) or B) today? I'm going for A (but with B in my back pocket just in case)

I am a fan of fonts, and it's not often they cause too much controversy in the numismatic world. But we're at one of those points!

The National Bank of Ukraine said on July 15 that it will change the lettering on its planned Hr 2,000 banknote after public backlash that the inscription too closely resembled a Russian typeface.

Read more in "UKRAINIAN BANKNOTE TYPEFACE TUSSLE" in this week's E-Sylum: https://www.coinbooks.org/v29/esylum_v29n29.html#article25

Still on holy days, a saint we can all acknowledge today, since we are reading this on the Internet. The 4th April is the feast day of Saint Isidore of Seville: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Isidore_of_Seville

Isidore compiled the Etymologiae, an etymological encyclopedia that assembled extracts of many books from classical antiquity that would otherwise have been lost. This attempt at collating knowledge has led to him being the patron saint of computers, the internet, programmers, students and all computer users.

I just sent out the newsletter! Are you subscribed? Quick, jump on board, and I'll send you this week's so you don't miss out: https://coinofnote.com/newsletter/

So, just to prove that I am definitely not above making a fool of myself - or highlighting when I do.... I spell checked the newsletter before it went out, because I'm professional like that.... and I found this gem.... which Word alternately wanted to correct from "paycheck" to "pay check" and back again..... Completely distracted by that, it took me until approximately four seconds after hitting send, to realise that the REAL problem was that the sentence itself is a tad gibberish.... Maybe Word should have highlighted THAT instead?

Oh well, good luck reading the newsletter. It turns out I don't actually know English.... at least it has pictures though!

It's #MysteryCoin time!

With those distinctive keys and hat behind the shield, it shouldn't be TOO hard to guess the WHERE. And with "PAVLVS VI P.M. AN.IVB.MCMLXXV" around the edge, the WHEN should also be achievable... so what I'd like to know is the WHY? What is on the other side of this coin which makes it topical for the current season? Let us know, and we'll have the answer.... a little closer to Easter...

Not so much closer, as I'm about to work on the newsletter which will have the answer shortly.... but do let us know what you think! I'm sure some of my #Christian, #Catholic, #Bible reading followers can guess...

On this day in 1876, the first ever telephone call was made by the device's inventor, Alexander Graham Bell: https://www.beoffices.com/first-ever-telephone-call

One of the first pieces I wrote about for the Coin of Note site was an Italian "Gettone Telefonico" token - a piece which also features on the cover image (& my profile picture here): https://coinofnote.com/gettone-telefonico-italian-telephone-token/

I attended the sacrament of reconciliation / confession / forgiveness / penance today. It has a few names, and I think it's my favourite. You just walk out feeling cleansed and at peace; loved by God!

Here is one piece I have which mentions reconciliation - quoting Genesis 33: https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Genesis%2033&version=NIV in which brothers Jacob and Esau meet after a 20 year estrangement and reconcile.

(Apologies for the blurry photo, I should have checked when I took it!)

Facebook's unwillingness to show posts from the people I actually follow but show random things I might be interested in sometimes has interesting results. Today I saw this post by Sandra Deiana - coin designer:

"From plaster to metal.
My portrait of Pope Francis created for the Malta Coin Centre. The journey from the sculpted plaster model to the finished coin is always a fascinating transformation.
Every detail you see in metal begins with hours of sculpting by hand."

@brie @histodons@fedigroups.social @numismatics@fedigroups.social While obviously not a scientifically detailed image, the size of the tail compared to the rest of the bird DOES lean towards a hen / rooster or peacock over an eagle or a dove.... Although having said that, I just searched for the dove with the largest tail.... and the Brown Cuckoo-Dove does have a tail which could fit.... Though the "crown" like (plumage?) on the head of your bird does lead back towards a hen or rooster. All of the other potential contenders have smooth round heads. My money is on whoever called it "Brave's hen" being right (FWIW).

Current US commemorative coins continue to make headlines. This week it is the dime without an olive branch. Widely noted because it came out the same week Trump captured Venzuelan president Maduro, the coin had nothing to do with the current US administration and was in fact a nod to the US Revolutionary war that created the nation. But as the editor notes, "Despite the confusion and controversy, I'm glad it has people looking at their coins again".

I agree! Keep looking at your coins :)

As an extra clue which should make the "Why now" very obvious.... why....today? This Sunday before Easter? :)

While I would never buy actual #coins from places like Temu, they are good for #religious pieces to add to my collection of #medallions with #bible quotes. Sometimes they are curious when you look closely though. Here is one.

1 Corinthians 16:13 says " Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be courageous; be strong." - this piece quotes the second point and the shield is a symbolic image which matches the sentiment.

The other side has Archangel Michael standing over a serpent - straight out of Revelation 12:7-9. Though it references Psalm 46:1 which starts: "God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble"... Ok, the Archangel defending us from evil, fair enough.

But the text is "Just for today" which doesn't seem to fit at all... Oh and a Narcotics Anonymous square in circle image? Ok, I did get it from Temu...

Here is a great example of the need to record those little bits of history we come across. This check is uniface, brass, rectangular with a hole and the number 1593 stamped into it. There is no way to know where it came from or what it was used for. It's meaning would be lost to history.

Except, because this piece came from the estate of a worker there, I know that it came from the Bevercotes colliery in Nottinghamshire, UK, which was the first fully automated mine: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bevercotes_Colliery

My understanding is the more common round checks with the colliery name were the worker's pay checks, and these ones were lamp checks, which would be placed near or on lamps, or taken from lamps, so miners would know when & if the lamps had been checked.

(Rectangle check is mine, the round one is from http://www.healeyhero.co.uk/rescue/individual/Bob_Bradley/Bk-6/B6-1993-P24.html and the colliery image is from Wikipedia)

Matthew 28:6: "He is not here; he has risen, just as he said. Come and see the place where he lay."

One of my favourite images on a #medallion is from within the empty tomb, burial cloths folded neatly, looking out the open door to see the three (now empty) crosses.

I wrote a little on this piece here: https://coinofnote.com/christ-died-for-our-sins-medallion/

Re last boost, @richlv@mastodon.social @richlv@mastodon.social forgot to add alt text. The coin shows the obverse of either a 1, 2 or 5 euro cent coin from 2023. From numista: "ligature of the Glagolitic letters H and R on the Croatian checkerboard

Scripts: Glagolitic, Latin

Lettering:
2023.
ⰘⰓ
HRVATSKA

Translation: HR, Croatia

Designer: Maja Škripelj": https://en.numista.com/338334

While I'm writing, the translation to English reads: "thanks to all the travelers who bring coins here (and also away) :)

Another Croatian coin."

(No criticism for it being in Latvian, translating is enough, sometimes automated and the ease of it is something we don't marvel at enough :) )

The "Eureka Bar" is a a "massive 64-pound California Gold Rush sunken treasure gold ingot". A 933.34 troy ounces gold bar, recovered from the famed 1857 shipwreck of the SS Central America, known as the ‘Ship of Gold,' widely regarded as the largest surviving gold artifact of the California Gold Rush.

The bar is insured for $10 Million. Kagin's Digital are offering 1,500 "shares" of the bar, worth an average of $4,333 each. See the article in E-Sylum and the links there if interested: https://www.coinbooks.org/v29/esylum_v29n12.html#article11

Mike Markowitz wrote an article in CoinWeek on Medieval Coinage of Georgia. E-Sylum has an excerpt. (And I present a toot-sized excerpt of the excerpt!). Full article at: https://www.coinbooks.org/v29/esylum_v29n12.html#article22

"The medieval coinage of Georgia reflects a remarkable intersection of cultures, empires, and religious traditions. Located in the Caucasus region between Europe and Asia, Georgia developed a distinctive monetary system during the Middle Ages. Georgian rulers issued coins influenced by Byzantine, Islamic, Persian, and Mongol traditions.

At the same time, these coins expressed the identity and authority of the Georgian kingdom."

Here is a piece which combines two interests of mine - a firefighter themed #medallion with a biblical message.

I've always loved the hymn "Here I am, Lord": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cDdniihKBzI

Based off Isaiah 6:8: https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Isaiah%206&version=NIV which, admittedly, has some challenging imagery - but the theme of giving ones self to the Lord to use to His purpose is certainly not an unfamiliar one.

I didn't get to post yesterday, but it was the most solemn day in the Church calendar. Good Friday, as we follow Jesus through his crucifixion and burial. These three medallions, from Matthew 27, depict Jesus carrying his cross, crucified and being taken down for burial: https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Matthew%2027&version=NIV

There are actually two versions of the stations of the cross commonly used. The "Traditional" version which includes the three times Jesus fell, and Veronica wiping his face. The "Scriptural", introduced by Pope John Paul II in 1991, reinterprets the stations starting with Jesus praying in Gethsemane, with all 14-15 stations (the women finding the tomb empty is optional) having specific scriptural references: https://catholic-resources.org/ChurchDocs/Stations_of_the_Cross.htm
