Depressing to see all these fools in command claiming "not being left behind in AI", while the ones who will have a chance to do ok in the following decades, among those whose area will still be livable, will be those having learned to live with little energy.

@chrisnelder I don't quite see what this has to do with me knowing mathematics, but ok. 0. Note that there is little difference in terms of global warming level between these pathways up until ~2030, if I remember correctly from my actuarial thesis.

  1. I am not talking about the situation, but about the direction: policies on carbon reductions are being rolled out in some countries, goals are most of the time not met, etc.
  2. The situation is not very bright either, that being said: recent years have been quite hot, and I saw several climate scientists wonder if we are in a short term anomaly or if we underestimated global warming.

@chrisnelder So, if you want to convince anyone that we are on track for SSP2-4.5, you need to at least adress current level of emissions against the various pathways projections. Also, because you have an irrelevant piece of information about me (being a mathematician) does not mean you should assume anything about my knowledge of the topic. I happen to have recently trained as an actuary and written a thesis about climate change.

@chrisnelder To be precise, it is SSP2 basis that took hits recently. It corresponds to a respect of countries' pledges on GHG emissions, and in the recent years we got Trump election and USA out of Paris agreement, the Russian war on Ukraine, and now US and Israël's attack on Iran. These are quite significant events not going in the direction hypothetized by SSP2 ; meanwhile, plane transportation is at its highest. If we regard SSP2-4.5 emissions, it does seems that up to ~2023 (little more recent data is available), we match that quite well (e.g. https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/29768659241304854 figure 3), but the political and economic direction is concerning.
