My first time seeing a Hummingbird Hawk Moth. It's little wings buzz fast like a hummingbird's - this photo was taken at 1/2000 of a second but hasn't frozen the wings completely - and they fly sideways and even a little bit backwards at times just like their namesake. Quite exciting to see one, really!

A South Island Robin. Cute and round forest birds, they're friendly and unafraid of humans, following you along a trail to grab any insects disturbed as you walk by

I came across a Kaka using its sharp pointy beak to get in under the bark of this tree. They do this to get at the larvae of wood-boring insects.
Found on Ulva Island, just off Stewart Island Rakiura, last week.

Some colours from the garden this year:
* an herbaceous Clematis - I think this is 'Arabella'
* Arundinaria auricoma
* Clematis 'Allanah'
* Filipendula
Some more lichen detail from the wooden seat outside the local shop. I think there are examples here of crustose (grey crusty one at the very bottom with raised plateaux), foliose (blue-grey lobed one on the lower right that looks like waves in a storm), leprose (powdery yellow one in the bottom right corner that's growing on something else), and fruticose (grey-green branched one top left) species, all in one shot.
These are growing between two of the slats forming the back of the seat, a shadier and more protected spot than the previous post which was of part of the sitting surface of the seat.

A mushroom on Ulva Island growing from the mossy forest floor. Just as I spotted this, a tour guide walked past with a couple of people and said the name of the species but I don't remember what they said - I think it began with "L"?
We had some time on beautiful Stewart Island, Rakiura, earlier this week. The Oban harbour at Halfmoon Bay hosts a number of seabirds, including albatrosses, muttonbirds (Shearwaters), and terns.
I managed to get some shots of this albatross (White-capped, I think) as it ran along the water as part of its take-off.

Umbrella mosses and lichens in lush greens and purples on the forest floor on (edit: Ulva Island, not) Stewart Island Rakiura.
Some of those mosses look a bit like tarantulas, but I promise they're not. I would've been running away rather than taking photos otherwise...

Lichen on a wooden seat just outside our local corner shop. The seat is pretty heavily colonised by lichen, with different species growing on top, between, and behind the slats.
This is a 40 image photo stack, hand held (well, kneeling on the ground and propped against the bench, holding my breath so as to be as wobble-light as possible).

So I bought myself a new Macro lens, and have been playing in the garden. Here are a few highlights at the moment:
Thalictrum (I think this is delavayi), Hakonechloa Macra Aureola, Catananche caerulea, and Athyrium Nipponicum (not sure of the variety, I'm afraid!).

Have been playing with the new macro lens a little more. I finally got lucky with a picture of a bumblebee enjoying some Hebe flowers.

...But, if they are Inocybe Lilacina as someone else has suggested (and the description and pics do look like a possibility), then those are apparently really toxic!

@deepmud Someone else suggested it might be lilacina, and that sounds like what I think the tour guide said. I don't remember hearing any "p" sounds at the time, and from a quick search they don't quite look right.
Lepiota do look like the mushrooms that come up in our garden from time to time, though, so I think you've helped with another identification that I hadn't even asked about 😆

@ronsboy67@mas.to Yes! Ulva Island is great! I haven't been through my pics from there yet - might take a day or two to get to them, so hopefully some of the photos of Yellowheads, Kaka and Kakariki come out ok 🤞
