@AAKL@infosec.exchange @theregister@geeknews.chat @lproven@social.vivaldi.net tbf, i just read the slides and I get their point. Orgas outside the US (especially EU orgas) have a need to move away from MS. At the same time ppl became so accustomed to AI, that not having AI at their fingertips might be a dealbreaker for them. To me this only means: KDE is no longer for the FOSS community, but aims for orgas. Gnome will be (not sure though since I havent used gnome in years) for private ppl and other modern managers (like niri *wink*) .. for the rest of the community? Not advocating for AI nativity. Just saying that I do get their reasoning, if I understood their slides correctly. EDIT PS: Please dont shoot! :ablobcatpeek:

@AAKL@infosec.exchange @theregister@geeknews.chat @lproven@social.vivaldi.net two hearts are beating in my chest: 1.: Slop is slopping and FOSS might not be FOSS anymore. AI will eventually drown out creativity and we'll literally, physically unlearn how to be creative. 2.: AI will be just another compiler-layer in all things creative and since open source models getting better and better, AI-models will just be another domain in FOSS. To me I think the critical point is what you mentioned already: Do we have humans that understand how to keep (the use and development of) AI in proper parameters and are these ppl in positions to enforce these parameters? One can only hope the above will be understood by non-tech-persons in charge.

RE: https://cyberplace.social/@GossiTheDog/117271475759526738 I wonder about the gain of this startup. Apart from building a bot network for propaganda purposes, once ai bots are established as trustworthy, I can't think of any relevant motivation. The anthropomorphization reaks of social engineering imo.

@SheHacksPurple@infosec.exchange I tend to doom and gloom, since I don't think that securing AI is about AI. It's about decisionmaking where and how to use AI, it's about proper risk and process management, it's about people. So unless we understand that infosec problems are always, always people problems as well, we will never get a hold on the second half of the problem.

@wdormann that's exactly what I was worried about. It suggests that whatever the/an app sends to the notification service gets stored, since OS notification settings would most likely apply only after and not before storage. That's .. creepy but not too surprising. Thanks for raising awareness!

@SheHacksPurple@infosec.exchange second post didn't go through. Blergh. Here it goes: While we know that the aforementioned is true for infosec in general and nothing new, I think that the anthropomorphication of AI may catapult this problem to another level. Not only are decisionmakers in danger of confusing people- and technology-problems, they are in danger of confusing the root of the problem (a technology XY that has to be supervised by ppl and governed through processes) with the solution to that problem (people who do the supervision and governing). So what happens when we substitute robust processes and oversight with more automated analysis, that turns into automated decisionmaking? Doom and gloom it is. I'd love to see how technological advancements could solve or at least mitigate this problem. I just lack the imagination.

@wdormann it is. I'm only worried about all the apps (or users for that matter) that rely on OS' built-in notification settings instead of more granular in-app-settings. Again: not too surprising but leaves a sour taste nonetheless.

@mitchellh@hachyderm.io

Ghostty is getting automatic scrollback compression, resulting in 70 to 90% less physical memory usage. It happens incrementally when idle, so it had no measurable effect on IO throughput. I'm not aware of any other mainstream terminal that does this. Demo video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZVAnhimPh8k

The gains let us increase the default scrollback limit from 10MB to 50MB, because on average a full scrollback will still compress smaller than the prior limit. More history, for free. ("Unlimited", disk-paged history is on the roadmap too)

Let's talk about cool implementation details, cause this was fun.

First, the data structure and memory layout ("PageList") I wrote two years ago finally pays off! One of its traits is that screen memory is backed by a linked list of page-aligned, page-sized (or page-multiple-sized) blocks.

Because each block is page-aligned and page-sized, we can use madvise to discard its physical backing while keeping the virtual address space reserved. Compressed pages therefore disappear from resident memory, but decompression is still guaranteed because the address space remains valid and we simply fault new pages back in as needed.

We use the same trick for our memory pools, too. Unallocated pool pages don't count as resident memory, saving another couple of MB per terminal.

This functionality is also available to libghostty-vt consumers via new ghostty_terminal_compress APIs. The consumer decides when the appropriate time to compress is and the APIs advise on compressability.

@Daojoan@mastodon.social First thing that came to mind: Freud didnt bring "listening to ones self" into mainstream, but actually "listening to others". Back then doctors weren't supposed to listen to the psychotic fantasies of their patients. Freud and the Viennese circle made that mainstream. So maybe .. that's the underlying issue for Mr. Andreessen? Introspection is not something that necessarily costs energy. Listening to others and being compassionate about it does however and could be perceived as something holding one back. Then again that wouldn't sound like something one could willingly relate to, does it?
