I got exposed to more LLM shilling and so I feel compelled to share this: The technological revolution that is claimed is fundamentally an economical one. Replace LLM by "offshore coding teams" and the challenges, tradeoffs, and costs become clear. If it became trivially cheap to outsource code to a team somewhere else in the world, what happens to code you could have written but decided outsource instead. What's the cost and what's the benefit? If the capitalist tells you "You should outsource your code, this is the future, it's inevitable" why are they telling you this? who does that benefit? In this analogy, we used to be much more cautious about what code we outsource, but recently the quality of outsourcing has improved to the point that businesses and governments outsource code to other countries, and other land-owners, all the time, without double checking what the code does, or how much it costs. Is this really advisable? What's the risk? Who does it benefit that a large part of our society suddenly runs code that never gets checked? That nobody is accountable for? That no local designed? Why is it a professor's responsibility to teach their students about the benefits and usages of outsourcing? What are the students going to learn? Who is ultimately going to benefit from the students knowing about outsourcing?

Universities as a service needs to go.

Make them free, make them honest, make people talk to each other, make them easy to transition in and out of, make them a beacon of opportunity, not a time sink and a money pit.

@julesh @boarders Happy to report that EPFL still does but you'd have to be in the "communication systems" degree to be forced to take the advanced courses, in CS we had: Information theoryAnalysis I and IIProbability ITheory of computation Physics Linear Algebra Algorithms If you were communication you'd have additionally as compulsory: Analysis IIIProbability II (stochastic methods, my nightmare) Looking at the curriculum today, communication systems has moved "introduction to machine learning" as a compulsory and "data-intensive systems" is now a compulsory for computer science. The point being, that imaginary curriculum already exists, just not in the UK

@julesh @boarders Slightly unrelated but I was extremely bummed for our students at strathclyde that they didn't get any of my favorite optional courses in undergrad: quantum computingOperating systems (kernel development)Software engineering (build an app to publish) (actually, compulsory for CS students)Advanced computer architecture (play with an FPGA) I also loved sneaking in the life-science or physics courses and getting to help with their assignments, but this would be impossible at strathclyde since cross-disciplinary action is taboo

The punishment for a pedestrian carelessly crossing the road is the death penalty.

How different would the world be if motorists faced equally dire consequences for their carelessness

2 years ago I thought there was no way I would cycle more than 2km to commute. The 1km I had to do every day was already too much, too dangerous, too uncomfortable, too impractical.

Now I happily go 10k each way because it's so nice

And the Go User Experience has been very well designed

@julesh@mathstodon.xyz haskell is performing a hack detecting a value of type IO and then executing it in IO, instead of returning the value like it would do for every other expression. Definitely a REPL UX problem

@zanzi @mc Finally got some time to ingest it and while it's valuable, I don't think it matches my frame of reference, nor the one in the original post. The main frame of reference in the essai is about "shaming people who don't even get to chose to use LLMs" but this is not the same demographic as "upper-class men over 50" nor does it represent the LLM misuse I empirically hear about from my immidiate social circle. What I see are people who have all the resources they need (health care, social standing, housing, wealth) and chose to engage with the technology (I would argue in a harmful way) motivated by superfluous goals. Shaming an addict into stopping is never going to work, but you sure can shame a politician for their policies and increase the pressure on them.

I'm not sure scope creep is going to make the discussion easier to have, if anything, it's going to make it even easier to confuse, or misunderstand something.

We can definitely shame politicians into behaving, that's happening to Keir Starmer today
