Wikipedia was around before Elon Musk’s current business empire, and will be here long after he and his companies crash and burn—events its volunteer editors will meticulously, neutrally, and accurately chronicle. Wikipedia will quote and archive his asinine remarks for future generations of historians. It must drive him crazy.

@billbennett@mastodon.nz Let him try. He can’t out-compete it, buy it, or squash it. Musk’s troll army can’t even sanitise his own Wikipedia article. Declaring war on Wikipedia would actually mobilise 250,000 volunteers to protect it, and he can’t afford to pay enough people to attack it.

@billbennett@mastodon.nz The Foundation has good lawyers and is used to defending attempted shutdowns from entire governments. Again, let him try.

@HannahClover @funcrunch @annierau You’ve inspired me to finally blog this process. Short answer: corner the person at an event, take a pic “for Wikipedia” & show them, upload it, they don’t really like it and send you a better one which they didn’t take, you explain copyright law to them, contact their photographer and create an email release to be forwarded, meanwhile they send you a not-great selfie and you create another email release. Best I’ve worked out.
