@edward@hachyderm.io it's @grajohnt@chaos.social i l'd thought of in the context of early retirement / existential freedom glass fusion hack projects, if you'd not met at #emfcamp then you should in the fediverse!

in the meantime "what profits someone to gain the world but lose their soul"; in whatever medium, life's offered you legroom for a big soul that is there for finding ;p

@justb4@mapstodon.space @schuyler@metasocial.com I remember the three of us (with co-author Rich Gibson) turn up at the FOSS4G conference in 2005, submitting so many talks because we think that'll get us in free (it doesn't) the hardcore open source GIS folks building tooling since the 90s are all "who the hell are these unknowns capitalising on our work for book $" but they give in to our charm Dirk Willem van Gulik does a keynote saying "based on what we learned from ASF, _don't_ start a software foundation" :D

did i invent this memory of a group photo of open geo luminaries at the Where 2.0 conference in 2006, all wearing matching t-shirts that read

"geowanking
we put the L in A/S/L"

https://www.oreilly.com/pub/pr/1532

or does anyone still have a copy of that photograph

@justb4@mapstodon.space ... you're not the first person to tell me that "Mapping Hacks" changed the course of their life, and it's lovely to hear :) the book wasn't my pitch or concept design, but i'm glad Rich invited me to become a co-author rather than a contributor, when they were starting to lose focus on it and miss deadlines we could think about a "where are they now" piece on the contributor list (who collectively wrote about 1/4 of the "hacks"), it was a stellar line-up!

There is an exciting prospect that academics and enthusiasts would solve many of these problems while "scratching their own itches"

@SK53@en.osm.town my future self went looking for a web page describing my visit to the Ordnance Survey to talk Linked Open Data, how they could get in on the ground floor etc, in spring of 2003; a combination of their research development and press people summon me there after reading the quotes in this Guardian article https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2003/mar/27/newmedia.onlinesupplement but the link was undiscoverable, and some of the things that are, we wouldn't choose to dredge up; that's how it goes...

@ldodds@mastodon.me.uk can you help me out with a missing memory? here in 2005 at WSFII there's an Open Geodata session with a panel including John Something at the National Archives, has an open license which formed the basis of the OGL, gets very into piano later. Forgetting surname, too many John Somethings in this world, want to offer the right credit!

@SK53@en.osm.town thank you for this question! it's written mid 2003 and edited mid 2004. can't remember when London Free Map starts as a project but this "hello world" post suggests it's still in quite a putative state when i connect with OSM https://lists.openstreetmap.org/pipermail/talk/2004-November/000051.html "working seriously on something i've only been dreaming about for years..." the overall sense is of relief. my reaction is "someone else is going to maintain this", with a lot of nudging around, inevitably

@gklyne@indieweb.social @SK53@en.osm.town our connection here is through the w3c #rdfig interest group channel on irc, semantic web / locative media crossover material, that's how i got into this :) https://www.w3.org/2003/01/geo/ - citation here for offering early sample data to @danbri@mastodon.socialhttps://interconnected.org/notes/2003/04/etcon/gonzo.txt - incredibly flattering review by Matt Webb of the first version of the talk on this line of work, "Gonzo Collaborative Mapping on the Semantic Web", that i spent the summer of 2003 delivering in different places

@justb4@mapstodon.space i remember meeting Ed Mac Gillavry of webmapper and Ben Russell of the Headmap Manifesto for the first time together in a London pub, mid 2003? both people who had a particular compelling vision very early... i remember it taking three hours to drink a single pint because the chat was so intense! I've lost count of the people who've reached out through the years to ask if i'm still in touch with Ben, but no :/
