The DIY approach, while learning GIS basics..2003-2005 were exciting times for geospatial: OpenStreetMap, Google Maps, tiling, weird stuff like Locative Media & GPS Art, Neogeography, culminating in first FOSS4G 2006, Lausanne, where I met my heroes, OSGeo est. Order of events is for historians... IMHO Without NMA data hoarding OpenStreetMap would not have emerged, or maybe in a different form like INSPIRE, brr..🙏
