Especially older tech from a time before everyone and their cousin had a computer and the Internet that was made public is really trustworthy to me. These organizations were developing tools for themselves, and they're smart enough to know that any loopholes they leave to use on you would be loopholes others could use on them. The only reason the tide has started shifting is because they're treating the tech differently these days, keeping their tools private, and they don't care if a hacker can use their backdoor to hurt you, so long as that hacker can't use the same backdoor to hurt them.
