The NHS is turning back on its commitment to keep its code open. We're asking them to reconsider. Would you join us?

We just launched the Open Source Endowment, the first ever endowment dedicated to supporting Open Source maintainers, with $693,000 raised already.
The world depends on Open Source, but making our ecosystem sustainable is a complex task. I hope that, with community consultation, the Endowment can help. 🙏
OSS burnout claims another project. On 2 Apr, an entitled user angrily asked the burned-out maintainer of nvim-treesitter to “go switch to something that doesn't require interacting with people”.
The maintainer replied “OK” — and archived the repo, stopping development of nvim-treesitter.
“I dove into Claude Code. I spent three 12+ hour days with it. I was intoxicated. My family was weirded out. Something felt off. (...) [I] ran as far away as I could to clear my head, through a deadly snowstorm to visit an old Amish friend.”

Andrew has been building tools to understand the Open Source ecosystem for over a decade, and a new independent paper confirms the effectiveness of his approach to supporting maintainers. I want to celebrate his work today! 🎉
It's a mistake for the NHS to abandon their commitment to keep their code open. I talked to @newscientist@mstdn.social to try to explain why.
“In Open Source, what looks like fairness often is not. Free for everyone sounds equitable, but the cost does not disappear. It is absorbed by those who can least afford it, while the organizations that benefit most often pay the least.”

@andrewnez@mastodon.social reviews a decade-old Open Source security census, which both succeeded and failed at predicting the concerning future we find ourselves in.

So happy to see that our open letter asking NHS England to keep its code open has reached 1000 signatures 🎉😊
The UK's NHS is abandoning its commitment to making publicly-funded code Open Source by closing down its repositories.
Why? The NHS is spooked after researchers with access to Mythos have reported vulnerabilities in an effort to make NHS code more secure.
This puts an end to the demonstrable good that Open Source NHS code has done in the UK and abroad; and it will not bring about the imagined security benefits.
