Say it, brother!

"A local control interface means the system can continue operating:

- without Internet access,
- without dependence on a vendor specific cloud service,
- without vendor-determined future cloud subscription fees,
- and without the risk of a manufacturer simply deciding they no longer wish to support third-party cloud access, and just turning it off."

From https://simonhackett.com/2026/05/18/the-home-battery-lock-in-you-dont-yet-know-about/

Yes, I know this helps Simon's current/future WIP Energy Autopilot business, and that's fine because this approach helps EVERYONE. You don't own a thing if you can't control it locally and/or it can be remotely bricked.

Maybe so, but unlike AI data centres, restaurants provide tangible value to the community they're built in. Notably, one can go there and eat food.

RE: @Elwell@mast.hpc.social

For storage folks in Melbourne, there's a Ceph Meetup happening on October 30 as part of the eResearch conference that runs from October 26-30.

I found this in our letter box today, and I want to love it because it is _so_close_ to being a cleverly rendered, simple, positive statement about something good the government has done. Unfortunately they just had to bring in the usual fear/blame combo with the little "valid only" line... #auspol #politas

@gurgle@aus.social @trib@aus.social I got one of those (the "wittboy") a few years ago for the same reason (no moving parts) but since discovered the haptic rain gauge is far from accurate if you have anything other than normal solid rain. It's terrible with light showers and other oddities - I got suspicious when I saw occasional wild variance between it and my old manual nylex rain gauge from Bunnings, so I went and also got one of these https://shop.ecowitt.com/en-au/products/ecowitt-wh40h?_pos=3&_psq=rain+gauge&_ss=e&_v=1.0 - hooks up to the same gateway, and has much less variance with my manual gauge. I've been meaning to write this up properly on my blog for ages but somehow just haven't found the time yet (sorry!)

A bit of work stuff again - creatively using `kexec` to boot into the Harvester installer in an environment where I was unable to directly boot an ISO image via the system's iLO:

@mls14 once you're on the electoral roll in Australia, you'll potentially be fined if you don't show up and vote in an election. But there's no penalties if you never enroll to vote in the first place... One thing that's often missed in discussions of compulsory voting is that if the state requires everyone to vote then the state must also make it _possible_ and _easy_ for _everyone_ to vote. It's the ultimate in enfranchisement if you look at it from that perspective. If you're on the electoral roll and you really can't find anyone you're prepared to vote for, for whatever reason, and you don't want to pay the fine, you can always submit a blank ballot. @nando161 @benroyce @knowprose @Enea90 @randahl
