Tracking sustainability trends & issues that affects British Columbia, Canada.

I believe public well-being must include sustainability: environment + social inclusion. It's foundational for civil society, income equality, and good governance.

“We are experiencing exactly what the climate models in the 1990s said we should experience now... ... more frequent, more severe #heatwaves, bigger temperature anomalies, more humidity, higher overnight temperatures... all part and parcel of the climate story" ~ #ClimateCentral org The 3rd major #HeatDome in a month is set to hit southern & central U.S.. Temperatures of 95-105F (35-40C) are expected -- potentially reaching 120F (48C) in some areas. #ClimateChangehttps://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2026/jul/25/scorching-us-heat-wave

On Wednesday morning the province's firefighters faced only about 20 blazes in what had been a relatively quiet season so far, but as of Saturday morning there were 113 fires burning, including about 100 started since Friday.

Hey Canada?!! New York became the first state to pause all construction of massive new AI data centers. The 1-year moratorium applies to data centers using 50 megawatts or more and will not be lifted until “consistent standards” for responsible data center development are set. The ban is intended to address the risks of pollution, rising energy costs, and diminishing water supplies. 1/2 #VanPoli #Vancouver #BCPoli #CdnPoli #energyhttps://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2026/07/new-york-is-the-first-state-to-impose-a-data-center-moratorium/

@RickiTarr@beige.party Ok, I just had to look it up... Wednesday is named after the mythological Norse god "Woden". Translated in Old English to Wodnesdæg . Modern day pronunciation was shortened over time, of course. I'm still writing/keying everyday words and thinking, "hold on, is that how's it's spelt". 🤦🏻‍♀️ https://www.pearson.com/languages/en-ca/community/blogs/english-days-of-the-week-9-24.html

@EdwinG@mstdn.moimeme.ca#BCwildfires and lighting storms have been quite unnerving for several years here: as high as 200-400+ active wildfires on a given B.C. Summer day. This B.C. Summer seemed to be a relief -- until last Friday's rolling ⛈️ thunder & lighting yielding 100 more fires. Not surprised of any correlation or cause by climate change given increasing trend of intensity & frequency of wildfires & lighting storms. Ongoing issues wrt potential water pollution and sleeper fires (aka zombie fires).

PM Carney's mantra, "when we control our own energy, we control our own future" with 3 pillars of the "global energy crisis" laid out: 1) affordability of energy 2) energy supply 3) climate change Former deputy chief of staff for policy in PMO under PM Paul Martin: [Carney's] address was "more about plans to sell our oil & gas than about ensuring we have enough energy ourselves. We're not talking about Canadian energy security." 2/6 #CdnPoli #ClimateChange #EnergySovereignty #Renewables

💥Whoa! Another Conservative MP crosses the floor to federal Liberal Party: long-time Conservative MP Marilyn Gladu...

"The past year has been like no other that Canada has ever faced, and I've heard clearly from constituents that you want serious leadership and a real plan to build a stronger and more independent Canadian economy"

Federal Liberals are now at 171 seats, one short of the 172 seats required for a (slim) majority.

Build the pipeline + they will come? Bieler School of Environment, McGill University: "In response to recent oil supply disruptions as a result of the conflicts in Ukraine and the Persian Gulf, many countries — particularly in Asia and Europe — reconsidered their over-reliance on fossil fuel imports and prioritized energy security by building out renewable energy infrastructure like wind and solar farms and turning to low-carbon solutions." 5/6 #CdnPoli #EnergySovereignty #sustainability

Is Carney pitching that Canada become more like Norway? Profits generated by oil & gas need to be used to help fund the transition to cleaner energy sources for domestic use. "Norway long ago acknowledged its petroleum reserves wouldn't last forever and that it should use the revenues to diversify the economy. [They] are not exposed to risks of energy shock or decline in the oil markets the way that Canadians are." 4/6 #CdnPoli #EnergySovereignty #sustainability

PM Carney "also admitted that in prioritizing oil production, Canada is moving further away from achieving its climate targets and that emissions would likely be higher than forecasted." 3/6 #CdnPoli #Climate #EnergySovereignty #Renewables

The latest edition of the Statistical Review of World Energy (July 2026) shows: "Renewables were the largest contributor to total global energy supply in 2025. China's approach, which includes an accelerated deployment of clean energy and stockpiling fossil fuels, reflects "a continued priority of self-sufficiency."" No confirmations or plans from Ottawa for Canada's energy self-sufficiency to date. 6/6 #CdnPoli #Climate #EnergySovereignty #Renewables https://www.cbc.ca/news/business/canada-energy-sovereignty-oil-climate-9.7265441

ANALYSIS | Carney talks about Canada's 'energy sovereignty.' But what does that really mean? | CBC News

Soon after Donald Trump took office for a second time, with punishing tariffs and menacing talk of Canada as "the 51st state," this country's leaders began to invoke the idea of "energy sovereignty." But the Carney government's interpretation of energy sovereignty seems out of step with other countries.

It seems 🍁's introduced fund is not the same as Norway's.

Norway has a diversification strategy portfolio.

But, according to a former Governor of the Bank of Canada: 🍁's proposed fund is "not a sovereign wealth fund in the traditional sense... it is an Equity Fund."

Andrew Chang: "At its core, it's a public-private partnership"

🤔 Will $ returns really be there for Canadians?

Will Cdns be on the hook again for cost overruns or failed projects? (TMX)

Stop calling Canada's latest big idea a sovereign wealth fund | About That

Prime Minister Mark Carney introduced a sovereign wealth fund for Canada to bolster national projects, create jobs and grow taxpayer money — but it's not a sovereign wealth fund in the traditional sense. Andrew Chang explains the stark differences between the Canada Strong Fund and other countries' sovereign wealth funds, and what we know so far about how it will work.
