The best things in life happen unexpectedly. When the #tea maker asked if I wanted to see the tea trees I was not expecting much different to what I had seen before. He put the helmets aside saying: "No police here"... that's Vietnam.
I thought we'd just go around the corner, but instead found myself on a 20 minute motorbike ride into the jungle on paths I never thought a bike could even go. The picture was taken at one of the safer spots, the rest of the ride I had to hold on tight.

It's already time to say good-bye to the mountains again...
Beautiful view of Hà Giang town from the hill and Km 0 - starting point of the "happiness road" (national highway 4C) and symbolic start of the famous Hà Giang loop.
It was on that loop that I first got in touch with wild tea seven years ago 🥹
Tasted a lot of fermented Vietnamese #tea today. The tea master claimed that they are all soothing and calming even though some were only fermented for about a year.
I am very caffeine sensitive, so was suspicious, also since a lot of #puerh I have tried has a strong effect on me.
I am surprised now that I drank seven (!) kinds of tea (2-4 cups each) and barely feel any effect from caffeine.
Comments/discussion very welcome, as I am really not an expert in the field of fermented tea 🙏
Ancient shan tuyet tea trees in the misty mountains of Hà Giang...
We visited there a few days ago. Chewing fresh buds directly off the trees made me feel the power of these plants first hand 🍃
It's good to be here and to really touch what I am selling to the tea drinkers back home 🙏
More tea trees and stunning scenery in Hà Giang. It's an almost mystical atmosphere up there in the mist. The trees are estimated to be around 200 years old 🍃
It might have been the last tea trees I got to see on this trip - soon it's time to go further South.
All the way from Hà Giang to Hội An... and I was never alone. My almost 5 yr old accompanied me bravely during the last 4 weeks. I might be the only crazy person in this world to go tea sourcing with a small child, but I'm ok with that.
Of course it was not always easy, but: We made it and now treating ourselves to a week at the beach in Hội An before it's time to go back to Austria with a suitcase full of... #tea :)
My producers went back to Hanoi today with loads of tea. But we are staying up here in the mountains for a bit longer...let's see what we find...
We had sticky rice cakes for breakfast (a bit like mochi, but less sweet) and then off to another tea maker for tasting. On the last picture you can see a container built to smoke Lapsang Souchong style black tea.
If you dislike fresh, extremely aromatic and on top of that really healthy food... don't come to Vietnam 🙃
Nem lụi nướng - a dish where you make your own rice paper rolls... so delicious 😋
And all that for 70000 VND (~ 2,30€) including a side of fried spring rolls, a bowl of rice, fresh kumquat juice and... some tip 🥹
"Why don't you go to China to buy #tea? - it's cheaper!" I have been asked this question many times in the past few weeks here in Vietnam.
The answer is simple: I love Vietnam.
When I first came here seven years ago, I remember stepping out of the air conditioned airport into the thick, humid air of Ho Chi Minh City and I instantly felt... at home. Already ten years prior to that there had been this incessant wish to visit Vietnam, lacking any logical explanation.
Taking a little break in Hà Giang town today from tea and tea trees after a week of sometimes exhausting travelling.
Delicious cà phê muối - salt coffee with the most special decoration ever.
If you think a double espresso is strong, you have not tried Vietnamese coffee. It's brewed with a special filter that makes the coffee drip ultra slowly - the result is delicious, but not for the faint hearted 🙃
SECOND SUMMER Wild Oolong is up to 50% off now until the end of the month 🍂
When I placed my very first tea order last year it was a lot of guesswork for me and admittedly also personal bias 🙃. Some teas sold out quickly, others I still have quite a lot of - this is one of them. One of my personal favourites and not only great in autumn but also wonderful to fight spring fatigue as the seasons change - a warming and uplifting bittersweet melody in your cup 🌱
