@hweimer@fediscience.org @seanpm2001@techhub.social I wanted to reply in a similar way: it depends on the software. "bold/italic or not" is usually decided by the choice of font (file). Given that, you need to associate the first Unicode codepoint with the one font and the second codepoint with the bold/italic font. The text shaping engine is usually capable of doing that. But the input syntax often does not allow that. #TeXLaTeX allows this. Markup languages usually do not enable it. I wonder about HTML 🤔

@behdad Do I understand the current state of Apple Advanced Typography properly? (1) If you receive a .ttf file, you might have tables with AAT data in there. (2) If you receive a .otf file, you don't receive AAT data.
