@inthehands@hachyderm.io IMO The US's particular culture around this goes further than the first amendment: freedom comes before other values, which is both a decisive advantage and a crucial weakness. I would argue that something like tall poppy syndrome has a socially protective aspect for example, and that is almost completely absent in the US.

@polotek@social.polotek.net gut feeling from previous tasks, but it's almost always "story points" which aren't supposed to be directly about time, so... In my first jobs that didn't use some kind of agile, I never had to estimate tasks.

@polotek@social.polotek.net yeah, I'm doubtful that they add anything useful, and they definitely dilute the meaning of an estimate further. A thing that also struck me is that you talk about estimating projects - that seems like a much larger unit of work than I ever had to estimate. Do those typically take on the order of weeks? Months? The projects I've worked on have typically lasted months or years.
