at a new job working unofficially as a sort of test period. it's pretty cool cuz i'm a mechanic! but not to gnaw on the good stuff, no, it's more fun to tell others that my coworker is maybe racist because he just randomly brought up that sweden has a problem with immigrants

i also went to uni yesterday to do my prototyping, but they didn't have enough parts available... i decided to get all the parts myself and got myself an arduino, some switches, a pcb to connect it all on and some lead-free solder!

found a person who can do 3d printing and laser cutting for me. i'll try sending a sample, see how my components fit into it, make adjustments and try another cut/print if necessary, and then try designing a board for version two. i'll also have to experiment with rotary encoders, try hardware debouncing using capacitors, and try to plan out the hardwired build in full. wish me luck....

so i miscounted the pins. turns out there are 18 easily accessible pins and the pinouts skip some pins. but! turns out, with some programming fuckery, you can desolder two thingies and you get two additional pins! now there are just microcontrollers with more easily available pins but i only got the pro micro and it's really common and really cheap so i wanted to use it for accessibility reasons. imagine my project pops off and people will be making it left and right - i need to make version 2 as cheap and accessible as i can! so i'll try this sometime, and for now, perhaps i can get by with arduino uno for testing

so now i am sketching my own version of an ideal dj controller. i need a lot of pins for all this stuff and luckily the pro micro has just enough. with some multiplexers. i haven't even made version 1 i am already making version 2

so i checked the pcb and it seems that the fuckery that involves soldering jumper wires to the cd4057 sockets has been resolved already. i don't have to fuck around with it! and thus the entire pcb should work fine and i should just solder the parts onto it!

update: ordered the components! so turns out i can't connect rotary encoders to a multiplexer. instead i have to use an I/O expansion board which makes sense because the version 1 of this controller also has an i/o expansion board specifically for rotary encoders. i don't really get how to wire it but at least there's some code available, i might be able to figure it out if i play with a breadboard for long enough

@nileane@nileane.fr note that not all thinks marked as air conditioners are functioning effectively as air conditioners due to operation principles. consider alternatives:

  • buy them a fan (should work under 36 degrees)
  • spray water on them (cooling through evaporation, helped me on long bike rides, works in drier spaces)
  • offer to swing a hand fan at them (stylish) for more information on purchasing air conditioners, see technology connections: https://inv.nadeko.net/watch?v=_-mBeYC2KGc

so i tried soldering it and it went wrong cuz my soldering iron crumbled. no problem i think, it was probably cuz it sat around for too long, so i went to the hardware store and got a new one. and it was better! for a while. it started crumbling too. so apparently i am doing stuff wrong cuz there's no way i ran out of two soldering iron tips within the same soldering session. apparently cleaning the tip on the wooden table and not tinning it has made it oxidize and crumble away... so tomorrow i am going to the store and getting yet another soldering iron tip and some brass wool while i'm at it... also my joints look awful...

okay turns out i can actually put an anime girl on it and it'll work fine, but now there's a problem of a) selecting the anime girls to put on there and b) dithering the images so that i don't have to rely on simple threshold black and white conversion. it's ugly. bleh. who wants their anime girl put on my pcb (who knows perhaps i'll have some spares and could mail you one)

so i have thought about it a bunch and did research and apparently you can get away with 1(!) multiplexer by using 7x5 keyboard matrix (3x5 matrix on the right + 3x5 matrix on the left + 1x5 grid in the middle) which will give you 35 keys by only using 12 pins! and then the rest is 8 additional encoder pins (three for each of 3 encoders minus one that's included in the keyboard matrix) and 1 analog potentiometer pin (from a 16-channel multiplexer) for a total of 21 pins which is just the amount that the pro micro has! except i forgot that the multiplexer needs 4 pins extra. fuck. can i connect rotary encoders to a 8-channel multiplexer hmmm

i have almost narrowed down how to use the MCP23017 and hardware interrupts. now i just need to experiment a bunch with a breadboard and arduino uno/pro micro so that i can actually try to put my version 2 together, at least on the wiring side of things. then i can get to prototyping the case and perhaps the pcb wouldn't hurt later down the line. but i think the first prototype should be on a large breadboard, and the second prototype should not use pcbs, only wires

oh wow they said it's gonna take 3 days but it's taking one. the solder mask was done really quickly and it might get shipped tomorrow already, which is nice! in other news i am now very educated on pcb manufacturing process and turns out you can make your own pcbs at home! a lot of it is film development techniques apparently

so i calculated and i will need 80 euros for the components and also 55 more for 5 pcbs. uhhh. yeah that's quite a lot but i might be able to scavenge some of the parts from things and places! if i manage to get enough mechanical switches that's already 15 euros less! and also jlcpcb is offering many many coupons so i could save on pcbs quite a lot!

it is alive! almost. two not very necessary buttons are not working, one rotary encoder is acting funny, and the pins for mech switches for some reason are not mapped at all.... i had to unmap some potentiometers so that they don't read random stuff randomly. but the eq, qfx, main/headphone volume, faders, xfader, bpm sliders, headphone buttons and track browsing works! yippee. now to screw around with programming and make it even better. add switches n stuff. idk. move on to version two

okay on deeper look i want [insert bad words] vibecoders. the project hosts it's files on A SHOP FRONT, instead of github, and lacks actual useful files like editable PCB files, because i really don't like the idea of some dudes' face on my pcb. i rather have an anime girl on it. in addition it lacks code documentation, lacks any kind of detailed documentation like what push buttons have been used, and in general it's surface level so i'll have to do my own digging. at least i'll come out stronger on the other side

i think this way it's also cheaper to make because now instead of needing 4 16-channel multiplexers and 1 8-channel multiplexer it's possible to use only 2 16-channel multiplexers and a 3x10 keyboard matrix for the keys, using only 19 of the 21 available pins on the pro micro. the only tricky part is that i don't know how to program this all together

by the way the price now is 50eur for the pcb + 66eur for the components so 116 euros total. i'm not including the price and time of 3d printing parts like caps and knobs. at the very least so it's not cheaper than a bare minimum controller... but it'll have more features - it'll have FX knobs and buttons, as well as 8 hotcue/sampler buttons (instead of 4). i'll just need to figure out how to make a shift button work and that's scripting...

so i found way to save costs in other ways! first, i need caps and knobs for all my buttons and controllers. it's quite cheap but i can save 10-15eur if i just ask my friends to 3d print them (or do it myself) second, if applying coupons on jlcpcb i can bring the price from 55eur to 40 so in total it'd be 60+40 euros - 100eur! that's slightly less than a new dj controller with the same amount of features! i'll just want to think about what else to add on the pcb in terms of anime girls and maybe little messages and probably going to order the pcb today or tomorrow!

this is now a diy dj controller thread. follow me on an adventure where i try to navigate this project without documentation just so that i can have a dj controller for slightly cheaper than new (110 eur) first, i have a spare pro micro clone, so that's pretty cool. idk how to flash it but i'll figure that out. next up i need to replace the bottom silkscreen layer completely so that i can remove that guys' face and instead put an anime girl on it. that'd be pretty cool and i think shouldn't even be that difficult. on the downside i will be removing helpful visuals that will guide me during assembly but i think i'll just check it on my computer before soldering it on
