Sometimes I make stuff. Sometimes it works.
Projects are often based around 6502 or 68K CPUs, and I also dabble in 3D printing with modelling in FreeCAD or Fusion.
I may have a slight #Amiga fixation

If any proof was needed that “smart” devices are a monumentally stupid idea, the toaster in Red Dwarf is it. #reddwarf #stupidtech #noai

What the actual frack was I thinking when I ordered the Amiga B2000 motherboard. For scale, it’s next to the Dark Connection LP (as in old school 12” vinyl) and there’s also a CD case by it too. Over 500 components and connectors to install and solder. I shudder to think how many solder joints there are…

We’re currently watching the box set of Batman ‘66, and I came to the conclusion that Alfred is actually the kingpin of Gotham City. The mastermind behind it all. The likes of Penguin, Joker and Catwoman are merely his minions! I’m prepared to die on this hill!

Got one untested and one “working” #Amiga A500 mainboards to provide donor chips for my B2000 reproduction.

The “untested” board, a Rev5, is indeed faulty and green screens on power up. The “working” Rev6a board powers up, boots from floppy (and also after moving CIA’s around), audio is good, and the mouse port works. More diagnostics needed, but it’s a healthy start.

I’ve transferred the chips from the bad board to the good one, one at a time, starting with Fat Angus, and everything carried on working, so I’m guessing the bad board has one or more faulty DRAMs. That’s fine, I need to salvage the 23 pin D connectors and the hybrid from it, and the RAM chips are the wrong type anyway, and the right type are easy enough to obtain. They will of course be socketed on the B2000.

Considering I bought the bad board for less than mainboards deprived of their chips sell for, I’m calling this a win!

I’ve never made a YouTube/Makertube/Anytube video. Should I make a series on building an Amiga B2000 reproduction, for, you know, giggles?

On the company Sharepoint, some random bot named copilot appeared and asked to help me. I told it to leave me alone and never bother me again.

Half expecting a call to say I should embrace the insanity…

@neil@mastodon.neilzone.co.uk old 90’s computers are looking more and more appealing. Other than the cost of course :-/

@rc2014@oldbytes.space i suspect it’s a perfect storm, the larger process fabs are seen as uneconomic, so a lot of older chips are going EOL as a result. There’s also a move away from DIP and PLCC packages towards QFP, QFN,BGA and other packages intended for machine assembly. Then there’s the DRAM is silly money, let’s cash in on SRAM too, and a minor disagreement in the Middle East causing chaos with supplies of all sorts of stuff, including raw materials used in chip production. Also, just in case you’re not aware, DIP versions of SST39SF0x0 chips are EOL, last time buy is early July.

@HopelessDemigod I still have the original 80MB drive from my Amiga A1200. It still spins up, if I give it a tap to overcome the stiction

@mcmartin I tend to use VASM for assembling source code to run on real hardware, though I’ve also used CA65 for 6502/826 chips

I left #Evri a shitty review, cos their driver left a parcel outside in the pouring rain, and was too lazy and boneheaded to ring the doorbell.

Apparently, reviews are subject to approval. What’s the betting my review doesn’t get approved?

I’m half expecting someone to chime in with “it’s not really retro is it?”…

I upgraded my GVP A1230 accelerator card from the 90’s, with 32MB of fast RAM.

The 1200 has been recapped with solid polymers, given a new case and keycaps, the PSU swapped out for a Meanwell and a printed case, the RAM is probably the last part of the refurb.

Though I do have a 50MHz 68030 that I could fit in place of the 40MHz 68EC030…
