Computer programmer older than I look but not too old to waste time talking about random #sci-fi and/or #boardgame topics.

I blog at https://sheep.horse because horse domains are too stupid not to use.

Do you like #startrek? You should play my game: https://sheep.horse/voyage_of_the_marigold/

I sometimes hang around on #metafilter.

Physically located somewhere near #Boston, MA

I will Favorite, Boost, Follow and Unfollow based on nothing but a whim, don't read too much into it.

@molly0xfff it always amuses me that prompt injection uses the same language that a villain would use to hypnotise someone in the 1960s Batman show.

It's old but Splix.io is still the best browser based pick-up-and-play multiplayer arcade game. No intrusive ads, no need to log on, always a few players on the main server. It's an almost perfect implementation of a simple idea. https://splix.io

I see an interesting blog post, I boost it here.

I read A Journal of the Plague Year a few years ago myself (long before the pandemic). One of the things that stuck with me is that (despite what all the Zombie Apocalypse media will tell you) humanity did not descend into isolated pockets at war with each other. People (mostly) helped each other despite the wave of terrifying and seemingly random deaths.

@neil@mastodon.neilzone.co.uk I fixed this on my own site a couple of months ago after putting it off for years. Turns out it is pretty easy these days with a few lines added to my style sheet.

The **really** cheap way of doing it is to add a CSS filter to the body element that inverts all the colors. This works but also inverts the images, which is probably not what most people want.

International Delurk Day, March 24/25th

By the authority invested in me by virtue of nothing really, I declare March 24/25th International Delurk Day. Yes I know that is two days.

Do you lurk on forums or blogs, reading but rarely adding to the conversation? We are all guilty of that. Take 5 minutes today to comment - add your point of view or just to say "good job".

Add your positive voice to the sea of Internet opinion.

Other readers will appreciate it.

@johnke@mastodon.ie what I don’t understand is how the bot developers can do such a bad job. I’ve had bots hit the same static URL from the same IP hundreds of times a minute for no good reason, wasting their own bandwidth as well as mine. What are they trying to achieve?

Just ran into the problem where Apple Pages uses stupid amounts of CPU, heating up my laptop.

The fix is the same the last time this happened - disable Siri Suggestions for the app. If you haven't done this since Apple released the new apps then you have to do it again - they haven't fixed this problem.

The best part is you can log in with your existing #mastodon account. The second best thing is that they already have my blog included.

@nicole fascinating! I imagine most machines with such a display would jump straight to having three frame buffers once memory allowed, as you note this gives effectively a planer display. I imagine such a display gives very odd results on fast moving video.

I see a lot of posts on Mastodon proclaiming that we need to bring back blogs and the "old internet".

I get the sentiment but you know what the old internet didn't have? A bunch of people complaining about it.

Be the change you want to see. Start (or update) a blog, interact with other bloggers, find and link to interesting (or stuff that interests you, at least) pages.

@db0@hachyderm.io As I understand it, there is no way for a purely static site to integrate with ActivityPub - you need a minimal set of dynamic endpoints to handle subscriptions, etc. This is all very possible but my site is (almost) entirely static and I plan to keep it that way.

@markmcb@mas.to Thanks for the write up, I have noticed a similar pattern on my blog but never thought to just turn off older protocols. I get so little traffic from google these days that even excluding "legitimate" crawlers would not make a difference.
