Just got my ticket to #PyConUS. I’m excited.

Last year was my first PyConUS. I hardly went to any talks; I mostly spent my time in the hallway. For me, a conference is about connecting with people. Being there in person is pure gold.

The other thing I absolutely loved last year was the number of education nerds. The Education Summit was fantastic. It was great to be able to pick the brains of so many fantastic teachers.

I’m really looking forward to this year’s event.

If you are keen to attend #PyConUS but it seems out of reach for financial reasons, consider applying for a grant.

Application deadline: 25 Feb!

I'd love to see more of the African community there and taking part.

The annual #Python Developers Survey is still open! Have you filled it in yet?

It takes about 15 minutes, and it makes a difference. It helps the #PSF better understand the community.

Whenever I can, I escape to the mountains. Here's a snap of a mountain pass in the Drakensburg, South Africa. Zoom in and see if you can see the path.

Out there, life strips down to the essentials. Each morning, I pack my home and everything I own onto my back and walk. That's all

When I get home it's easy to spot unnecessary life complexity.

I’m really looking forward to #PyConNamibia. I’ve been going for a few years now, and it’s a wonderful community.

I especially like the focus on education - it’s a conference that plays the long game.

RE: @preludetech@fosstodon.org

Here's an example: Lots of people procrastinate and don't talk about it at work because it could get them in trouble. But it's so common it's almost normal. Facing it head-on, without blame or shame, is a very good idea.

RE: @ThePSF@fosstodon.org

OSS has been in a tough place recently; many organisations and projects have been under strain. It's important to be proactive about supporting the projects we believe in and rely on.

For all of you who supported the #PSF fundraiser, thank you for helping to secure the future of this organisation!

Another December adventure: Navigating Waterval Boven with a new friend (and getting him comfortable with absailing). In a past life I did a lot of rope work and it's always fun to share that kind of thing with new people.

  1. Brownfield projects usually have cobwebs in the corners: hasty decisions, old tools, false starts, and changing practices due to lessons learned. If you want to use an LLM to write feature code on a brownfield project, you’re unlikely to get great results if you just jump in. It's important to start off by getting a handle on how you want your code to be: what standards you wish you had in place already but don't.

  1. This is one reason why I steer clear of Claude’s init command. It explains the project structure as it is, not as it aspires to be. And it only captures what’s obvious.

The good news is that if you’re careful about how you craft your SKILLs, you can sweep up many kinds of technical debt pretty quickly, assuming you have a few safety nets in place.

Early in my career, someone told me to always code as though the next developer who'll touch your code is your client. That advice stuck. The principle still holds — but "readable" now means a harness can parse it. "Usable" means a harness can set up the project, find the scripts, and follow the conventions without you babysitting it.
