ANSI artwork sales - one stop in the long-running effort to make a living off of digital art.

"Around the same time, Lora Ruffner decided to see if she could turn her artistic talent into a business."

The business of BBSing: ANSI art and webcomics, Part 4 - Break Into Chat

As BBSes turned into businesses, some sysops and developers started making real money. Could ANSI artists and publishers do the same?

As @captaincalliope@indieweb.social identifies, naming harms w/o the power differentials that caused them makes manifestos easy to co-opt:

“Terms like ‘private,’ ‘dedicated,’ and ‘prosocial’ can be deployed to legitimize enclosure, concentration of control, and unaccountable personalization by organizations whose underlying structures remain extractive. A manifesto that wants to reshape computing must speak directly to the power arrangements that define computing today.” https://spacecadets.love/author/captaincalliope/

I'm often humbled by how little I know about the problems I'm trying to solve.

But "Fixing Without Understanding" by @jessitron@hachyderm.io has the unintentional consequence of reminding me of how infrequency I use Gerry Sussman's "programming by poking" approach.

Being able to inspect the dryer's internals before you attempt to fix it makes a tremendous difference.

@mwichary@mastodon.online How far north might you get? At the Deutsches Museum you'll want to make sure you check out the Dehomag they have. Quite rare. There is this museum that I've never been to: https://randoc.wordpress.com/2017/01/15/an-ibm-museum-in-germany/ There's also this, which I haven't visited: https://www.f05.uni-stuttgart.de/informatik/fachbereich/computermuseum/

An IBM Museum in Germany

Lately, I was lucky to visit an IBM museum in Böblingen (near Stuttgart), Germany. I write “an IBM museum”, but actually, it is “the IBM Museum” in Germany although (as far …

Microsoft will enforce software IP until the bitter end. Here's their recent archival release of Tim Paterson's DOS:

"[it] targets Seattle Computer Products' ASM assembler, so you will need a copy. It can be obtained from any release of 86-DOS or MS-DOS by Seattle Computer Products."

Hyperlinking to this could be dangerous. Just look at the (c) notice:

> Copyright 1979,80,81 by Seattle Computer Products, Inc.

@yaxu Pretty great find. I'm not familiar with any of his work for dance/movement/etc... unless you include opera/theater. Does it exist? This doesn't lessen the guidance in any way. Just asking if there is a direct connection.

"Cash is Back Baby!", by @davi@mastodon.social, points out how a long-time trend in Germany is ticking up and becoming codified in Australia:

> The 2026 laws mandated acceptance at groceries and petrol stations, and banned surcharges on cards and digital. Policy followed a strong and growing cash preference.

@dan @schmudde @jessitron Well we can be slightly comforted by the fact that the design of brakes has a lot to do with the laws of physics. Versus manufacturers that make things hard to service so it’s easier just to buy a new unit.

Celestial Phenomenon Over Nuremberg - April 14th, 1561 - Flashbak

As the rosy-fingered dawn broke across Nuremberg in Germany on April 14, 1561, the city’s inhabitants looked up. Above them  they saw a mass of objects – crosses, tubes, globes, strips of colour and a huge black arrow. They appeared to be engaged in a fight, zooming this way and that. One of the … Continue reading "Celestial Phenomenon Over Nuremberg – April 14th, 1561"

Oh to be in Stuttgart:

“It is 2026. We have tried all the key combinations and helped to build the world in which we are hardly needed anymore. Computer users have generated enough data, uploaded enough videos, photos, texts, and documents for AI slop to thrive and for the Dead Internet to zombie around forever. The world we once saw as a place where we can be ourselves … has squeezed and evaporated our dreams, producing a [repurposeable] concentrate.”
