Runrig

Hello @SocialCoop@social.coop + wider fediverse! 🚜 👋 🐘

Runrig is a project to provide co-operative infrastructure & free software tools to farmers & food workers. It's also a design methodology for bottom-up, community-based ownership & control of the digital platforms that coordinate the production & distribution of food & other natural resources in a given foodshed or bioregion.

"In a world of “move fast and break things,” we’ve chosen a different tempo — one rooted in care, deep listening, and collective stewardship. Slow software means building for long-term resilience and meaningful participation, rather than chasing novelty, speed, or scale."

Scalability is fundamentally an expression for the rate at which a technology can increase socioeconomic inequality over time, effecting how resources are allocated and who controls that process.

It should be viewed as a measure of extractivism and of social control.

"Federated Municipal Platforms: A fundamental design pattern"

This one's a bit of a beast, also really critical to the project, as a comprehensive design document for Runrig's core value propositions.

Shares & kind/constructive feedback would therefore be much appreciated! 🙏🏻

Joining the #fediverse is part of a new direction for Runrig.

TL;DR: The Runrig Journal will be a way of developing & documenting Runrig's design principles out in the open. I've also got some updates from the past 18mos, #ICYMI.

New post about "Illegible Agriculture" is up on the Runrig Journal!

It's Part 1-of-2 on the theme of abstraction, complexity, and scaling. Alternate subtitle: "Where computational, Hegelian, and anarchist forms of abstraction all collide!" 💥
