@attoparsec@clacks.link what on earth. first, short-lived theory: shed is leased out to a bunch of tenants that each have a right to, and motivation to have, their own camera, but then...why would you do that? second theory: someone's having fun and has a bunch of discarded cameras. that would explain some cables hanging loose/missing and a couple of cameras that look like they're pointed straight at the roof.

@azonenberg@ioc.exchange people will say "at our scale we need the cloud" with no idea that one (1) physical node can do a positively face-melting amount of work now

@nycki@critters.gay also, communicating primarily over chat reminds me of the 'situational disability' framework: it's a bit a dose of neurospiciness for all that is, visual/auditory cues aren't there, so one has to read harder, or guess, at all the things we normally put in a bucket called 'tone.' (otoh, the work of producing/parsing cues goes away too. i think most people find meetings all day tiring partly for that reason.) there are some tools to send signals, like writing style and emoji, but they're lower bandwidth

@nycki@critters.gay something like this but more informal ("so weird it couldn't really be what they think" or such) was also useful for introducing kid to the idea of sarcasm also, it helps explain who you can/can't safely be sarcastic with about what topics. people who have no idea what you really think may not be sure whether something that sounds like a stretch is saracastic or what you sincerely mean! and the less you know them, the less you know about what they know about you or how they handle sarcasm for what it's worth it can be exhaustig in complex environments (company where you interact with lots of people in different amounts, with differing norms of formal vs. informal), even for folks not diagnosed as having a medically-recognized form of spiciness

@inthehands absolutely; i think corporate organizations often set things up so the top is insulated from how things are going at the front lines, or get a happy version of it, and so will do all sorts of things that only looks good on paper

@virtuous_sloth@cosocial.ca @trs@metasocial.com Yeah--they're sometimes chosen specifically so it takes a minimum number of bitflips before it decodes to a different message, since that's how you minimize errors in the wild. If you want to make near-twin QR codes with different messages you could choose the L level, ~7% error-correcting bits. So maybe 3.5% of the bits ideally flip after you change your msg, and you could introduce 'errors' in somewhat under half of those to restore them to their old values

@virtuous_sloth @trs Eh, I have some numbers wrong; I think L has more ECC bits than I thought. Wiki says: The Version 1 QR symbol with level L error correction, for example, consists of a single error correction block with a total of 26 code bytes (made of 19 message bytes and seven error correction bytes). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/QR_code#Error_correction
