@ifixcoinops@retro.social I think you've highlighted a barrier to this being made before: the people who could create suxh a thing have in general not been exposed to the average person's computer knowledge in a looooong time, if ever

@ifixcoinops@retro.social what is it with dads and using computers from before the financial crash? When my dad died he was still occasionally using his Dell Dimension from the pentium 4 era. He used it for Memory Map, which allowed him to view OS maps, that I am sure he paid for*

@ifixcoinops@retro.social well if you teach them to read then you don't need to install the gate, a sign that says "no unaccompanied babies on stairs, £5 fine" will suffice

@kirch@tilde.zone Bryson is one of my favourite authors. I think the quote is from his column, compiled in "Notes From a Big Country", in the instance where he describes the process of calling tech support. The more things change, the more they stay the same.

Something about rehearsing and recording voiceovers really wears down my energy faster than it feels like it should.

However, I have found that a cup of tea made with four sugars and enough powdered milk to make a whole glass of milk perks me right back up.

I've wasted the last 6 hours trying to set up some sort of task management system so that I can waste less time. I cannot for the life of me get any of them to fucking run.

This has put me in a very bad mood.

"install our software using this docker compose file"

Yeah, cool, could you explain why the default setup you provide is explicitly deprecated and doesn't even work, and if you modify the compose file to match what the correct setup should be it... Still doesn't work?

Pretty much exactly ten years ago I unexpectedly became the defacto network engineer for the school I worked at. I was in no way equipped to be such a thing. The terms of my contract were not favourable for the level of responsibility, so I did the sensible* thing and quit my job to go deliver pizzas.

I think about that sometimes.

the correct answer to any technical problem is to bury your electronics in a large pit and go sit in the woods reading a book

I've been window shopping for used P-series ThinkPads. I'd love to buy a brand new one, but it's a lot of money in comparison for not that much gain.

I hopefully have some money coming in from a tax fuck up being fixed, and it would probably do me a lot of good to have a separate laptop for work and pleasure.

Fifty five plus hours without a cigarette.
No particular cravings, the NRT seems to be dealing with that ok.
What it doesn't seem to be dealing with quite as well is the withdrawals. I am a ball of incandescent rage and anxiety.

Something I'm particularly pissed off about is people who smoke at bus stops without even making an effort to go downwind of other people standing there.

It's doing funny things to my appetite for food too.

Something I've noticed compared to "quitting" using a vape is that with traditional NRT the quantity and character of the accumulated Shite your lungs express is different. Easily the most physically unpleasant part of quitting smoking.

I'm finding that I actually quite like docker containers, particularly using DockHand as a GUI frontend.

But it is highlighting that actually it seems like a lot of FOSS projects don't actually know how to make them properly.

I was going to go to the office today, I was looking forward to it, I was even going to go and pick up some food for the weekend from Lidl on my way home.

Unfortunately my brain has Gone A Bit Funny and now I'm not feeling it, and I feel bad about that.

We have enough programmers and other touchers of computer in FOSS. We need more humanities folks, and perhaps a few people who understand that computers are supposed to be tools to Do Stuff, not an end in themselves.

@RnDanger@infosec.exchange @djsundog@fedi.reclaim.technology I think I see what you mean now (though, still unsure what it's got to do with tables, but that's ok!) though that particular aspect doesn't bother me all that much, because I grew up with computers that were already a decade old by the time I had them my muscle memory for using computers has a built in "wait for ready" loop between my inputs The version of the KDE file picker on my work computer has an annoying bug where where if you click to edit the name of the file you're saving, it actually brings the search box into focus instead. It really pissed me off the first couple of times, but now it'd actually throw me off more if it *didn't* do it :D

The main benefit of waking up early is, in my eyes, the fact you can bugger about for a couple of hours without wasting too much of the useful day.

Replying to
@RnDanger@infosec.exchange @djsundog@fedi.reclaim.technology I'm not sure what you mean? Nor does it seem to have anything much at all to do with HTML table layouts. Table-based layouts are abuse/misuse of the feature, they have no bearing on the loading, fast or otherwise, of textboxes. You know who based layouts are absurdly inaccessible to? Folks who use screenreaders, or even just folks who have a display resolution lower than the designer planned for. They were a necessary cludge at the time, but we've developed much more appropriate and robust means of achieving the same ends. Could you elaborate on what problem you're describing? I'm genuinely puzzled.
