Okay #DIY and #solar folks. I have a hairbrained idea to re-purpose an old dishwasher circulation pump for a #garden pump to pair with my rainwater catchment system. But I'm a novice when it comes to #electricity and calculating loads. How would I even go about powering the pump once it's removed, and testing it to see how much power it draws so I know what kind of solar panel and battery I'd even need? #solarpunk #gardening #reuse

If you (like me) have people in your circles that have yet to face reality, it's your job (and mine) to keep their attention on those who can't speak for themselves. To stand up and fight alongside our neighbors. I can't be out in the streets every day, but I can be in my social circles pressing and holding power to account. We have to find a way that does this without burning every relationship, for that serves nobody. But we still need to figure out how to make it impossible to ignore reality.

It seems to me that this furniture just uses screws to hold the load off he seat but maybe I’m missing something. That doesn’t seem to be enough support in my mind. This is not to say what is happening now is the same, but rather that it is an expansion. Black and brown folks have been dealing with this violence for generations. White folks smarter than I have fought against it as well. It took me until 2020 to truly realize the extend of the violence wrought against what people in power consider the "margins" of society. I will not waste energy on shame or guilt for taking so long, though it humbles me that it took until then. But there's work to do.

@gregdosh I'm mostly in the "wouldn't it be cool" camp of thought right now. I'm considering reaching out to my local library for what space could look like for such an event. I have a tendency to want to expand before taking even the first step (I discovered https://therestartproject.org/about/ today and now want to do full on repair events too haha). But I think starting small and focused is a good start. Maybe a "Computer can't upgrade to Win11? Try Linux" kind of campaign with an Intro to Linux meeting?

The 23rd could work for me at a park/library as long as it's not between 1-5pm that day. Mid morning would probably work best. The Roseville branch of the Ramsey County has tons of space and would be my preferred location but I'm open to meeting elsewhere as well.

@gregdosh I actually emailed the Roseville branch of the ramsey county library today inquiring about what it looks like for using space. I’m in the Roseville area so funny you mention it. I also like the idea of a recurring event. I came up on the help desk so feel like I can troubleshoot and resolve many things though windows kinda just sucks now and I’m less experienced with Linux. RAM/SSD upgrades is a good idea.

Just a reminder that these times are very much ✨✨ P R E C E D E N T E D ✨so please stop saying "in these unprecedented times." Fascism has happened many times over. Acting like we've never seen this before is just making it seem like nobody knows what happens next (both if we don't fight it, and in what ways to fight it). It's precedented, unfortunately. But that also means we have an ANTI fascist playbook we can put to use.
I'm just over here trying to figure out how my particular #sysadmin, #techsupport, and #selfhosted can directly benefit my #minnesota community that is under attack by the federal government and everything I come up with seems hollow, or waaaay too involved for the current time and energy I have available. #mutualaid feels hard to get into even though in theory it should be so easy to do. Also, imposter syndrome hits super hard when you're trying to figure out how useful you can be :(

@thecodingbeard Depends on who you ask, but a working definition could be something like "voluntary and collaborative exchanges of resources and services among a community" or something like that. Ultimately it's resource and skill sharing that benefits all. The idea is that the people in need of things are the best judge of what is most helpful, and the community itself is often the best help rather than some NGO that gatekeeps resources or does "means testing."
