@kaia@pleroma.soykaf.com Making sure there's a room to bench-press when locked down in the bunker, surviving on MREs, is truly big-brained.

@kaia@pleroma.soykaf.com @m0xEE@breloma.m0xee.net They send out these donation campaign reminder emails to previous donors, which are very American-style annoying, but some of them butter you up with praise about how special you are for donating (before switching to giga-begging mode in the next paragraph) and that's kind of nice to see in your inbox sometimes.

@lain@lain.com @WandererUber@poa.st Since you just admitted that you do have the patience for point-and-click, a really obscure but pretty-good-for-a-videogame-story-one is https://store.steampowered.com/app/1360390/Cats_and_the_Other_Lives/
It tries to be (and succeeds to a surprising degree) a Robert Altman style ensemble drama, but the player character is the house cat, so you experience the story entirely by just being in the room with the human cast by accident, just doing cat things.

@lain@lain.com @WandererUber@poa.st I just made peace with the fact that really the best you can hope for in a video game story is that it doesn't clash too heavily with the gameplay and succeeds in establishing a vibe.
The absolute peak achievements in video game stories (outside of interactive fiction) are on the level of middling Hollywood scripts or YA fiction, or graphic novels. I'm okay with that, if the gameplay makes up for it, or if the story is a mystery and the gameplay (or part of the gameplay) is to figure it all out by exploring interesting locations - and I'm not able to accurately guess where it's all going well before the credits roll (but it isn't random nonsense either).

In many ways, I'm such a natural born normie, I could open an "ask a normie" booth, Lucy van Pelt style.
Like, I made it into the 3rd decade of my life thinking that when people talked about their "porn collection", surely they were exaggerating, or joking, speaking metaphorically.
Like me, as I would refer to my always-changing, never more than 50 favorited videos on big-porntube or a bookmark folder with like max 20 entries as my "porn collection".
And then I met somebody with an actual porn collection.

I have largely ignored generated music up to this point, because music is the art form I'm the most snobbish about, and I'm also pretty picky about sound mix and production, but after checking out Suno 5.5, I would rate it pretty likely that a competently prompted and refined song made by that model could end up in my collection.
Even more likely if the model is just used for editing and touching up an already well-made traditional recording.
And if the next generation of that model makes another step just as big as Suno 4 made to Suno 5, all bets are off.

Tfw u read about something and it's equal parts bleak and attractive https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dazi_culture
New neighbors moved into the apartment below mine, removed a built-in closet and found that the back of the closet also held a bunch of cables coming out of the wall from the floors below and going back into the wall to the floors above a few feet further.
One of those cables seems to have been the phone wiring carrying my residential internet connection, which is now in pieces.
And so, from one moment to the next, I find myself in hell between a technically incompetent (and miserly) landlord, a telco, an ISP and without a residential internet connection. And I'm not a wire person either.
Fun times ahead. I'm thinking about getting an unlimited 5G data plan so I can at least have more or less the same internet as I had on the wire while wrangling all of the aforementioned into fixing the wiring.

Seriously thinking about getting an e/OS Fairphone 6.
Thank god for Academia
They shared experiences are dead and the atomization spiral is irreversible, but did you know that LIDL sells almost the exact same varieties of fresh bread in all of its stores world-wide, including the U.S.?
Sure, you won't be able to talk about whatever shows you're watching anymore, but those pretzel rolls?
They are the same everywhere.

I don't even remember how it happened, but I got sucked into loneliness epidemic content a little bit. Pretty bleak. And all of the content is either useless, at best, or just goads people into driving themselves even more insane.
Bent down to pick up some littered garbage, phone fell out of my breast pocket and there it is, first crack in the screen. No good deed goes unpunished.
More image dumping for testing purposes.

@lain@lain.com @feld@friedcheese.us FWIW they watered down their no-ai policy literally just yesterday. But submitting AI-generated natural language descriptions of bugs and possible fixes in AI-generated pseudo code in lieu of directly applicable patches is a) kind of funny and b) does not really increase the required effort on the part of the reporter, so why not do that
My residential internet has been restored, but I lost some 10 Mbit bandwidth in the process. DSL rules. 🙄
But now that we found out where the wire runs, we can get to work and get all those crumbling terminals fixed, eventually.

I finished Caravan SandWitch, a wonderfully chill relaxploration game, whose by-the-numbers-DEI cast of characters and rather generic solarpunk-scifi scenario, more by (I suspect) unintentional implication than conscious intention, ends up transporting some pretty radical messages for a video game ("rainbow capitalism won't save you" and "eco-terrorism is good, actually" among others).
New neighbor moved in on the ground floor, but I'm still the only person in the house who understands the concept of a trash bin compartment with a tipping aid.
I guess until I or somebody figures this out, I will have to convert everything to gif.
Old skool, baby

I rewatched Mezzo Forte the other night and as if the sex scenes weren't hilarious enough in their own right, the subtitles felt like one-upping the dialogue by typo.

Guys guys guys guys guys guys there's a new Boards of Canada album out and it doesn't suck 😱
All these 19th century economists whose works still haunts us today in various ways had so many children
So ... I can upload mp4 videos and gif images (animated or otherwise).
png, webm, jpeg simply don't show in the editor and are never posted.
The stuff that does work shows up in the configured folder for uploads ... but I'm noticing the uploads folder now seems to get populated with a hashed directory tree, in the previous version I ran here (2.7.0) it was still just a flat directory and files had very long hashes for names. Anyway I think that rules out a permissions issue.
Anyone want to hazard a guess now if it's frontend or backend?

I found Jamie Paul's substack / blog the other day, and the only thing I don't like about it is the somewhat cringe name, "American Dreaming".
The 'Memory-Holing "Wokeness"' series of articles aligns so perfectly with my perspective on all of the issues discussed in them, it's uncanny.

There's a first time for everything: In an act of utter desperation I clicked on a YouTube video that promised a solution to some stupid Microsoft shit problem, and it was narrated by a man with a very Indian accent and ...
... it was the correct solution and it was shown within the first 15 seconds of the video.
