Learning to skateboard while over 42 is truly an extreme sport. One wrong move and I’m out of the game for a week!
Realized the Lautapelit.fi store in Kamppi (Helsinki) stocks all kinds of spare parts for board games. Carcassonne tiles, player pieces, little cubes, tokens, bases, empty tiles… Finally got to bring Charmander back to the game now that we got a replacement base.
Today, I'm 42 years old.
And because I'm 42 years old I ate some granola and bought a pair of Muji nail clippers.
Staunchly in my middle age era. :mood:
When you are forced to sit at a desk at work after midsummer.
Had to wrestle with an email bot in order to find out what happened to a lost delivery.
The bot was reluctant to help because, according to it, the parcel was delivered over a year before I even placed the order, so CLEARLY everything was just fine.
And, like, yes, it was obviously wrong. That's not even the issue here! The issue is, I have to convince its discordian heuristic that either it needs to reflect on its error or preferrably escalate this to a human.
What a time to be alive!
Teaching a kid to read or swim or ride a bike is truly one of the great joys of life.
You get to give someone the gift of a whole new world! Once they learn the skill they can just... go and be in a totally new environment. Traverse distances and encounter things they couldn't before.
It's like you just made the world a better place not just for the kid but for the rest of humanity too.
In an amazing feat of cybersecurity, the IT department now injects a warning at the start of all emails that originate from outside my organization.
This fucks up the mail preview. Now, all external mail (meaning like 60 % of my inbox) has the preview "NOTE! External sender." It makes finding the right email difficult and obfuscates the contents making it actually more difficult to gauge their veracity.
One of the saddest things in today's turbocapitalism is that we're blasted with ads, marketing, and dark pattern UI every dang second of our online lives, AND YET when I actually decide to spend money and follow up on an ad, it's incredibly difficult to do.
Like, I was sent a text to upgrade my internet plan and it still took me the better part of an hour to jump through the hoops to do it.
The fucking misery of this... this, all!
Me, discovering a cool turntable: I'll slap some speakers onto this thing and it's going to be great!
Me, reading about amps, pre-amps, active speakers, and hifi setups: Oh no. No, no no no no! :pika:

Kass Paksu, the Estonian cat who got stuck, was rescued, and now lives on in Finnish internet folklore. ❤️
Tidal played me some Leila K and before I knew it I found myself thinking "back then they really knew how to make proper music".
Folks, I am old as BALLS!
Winter Olympics? Sure, I watched ’em!
Have you ever wondered why so many organisations keep using commercial social media? Why are comms teams reluctant to move away from Meta’s platforms? How did we end up here, and what should orgs do?
Well, I wrote about the history of social media adoption among comms professionals to answer these questions!
Some people spend their days prompting LLMs.
Me? I learn yoyo tricks!
We'll see who gets left behind!
Mean asshole theory
If you're a mean asshole at work, it's likely that your colleagues won't contradict you or offer honest critique of your work because they are wary of you lashing out.
This leads to a false sense of flawlessness. For decades, you spend your time pointing out faults in others, but you yourself are infallible. The only people who contradict you are either wrong or other mean assholes, who can be ignored because, well, everyone knows they're mean assholes.
Todellinen helmi on kuitenkin Pikku Kakkosen joulukalenterin kiipeilynalle. Kinesteettisesti nappiosuma! En tiedä, onko viittaus Hukkataipaleen Nalleen tahallinen, mutta toimii silti!
I wrote about the astonishingly good mystery game Type Help.
If you want to get into it, right now is the perfect time: it's available as a browser game in its original form but it's also coming out as a more polished remake later this year.
And which one should you go for?
Well, that's basically what my blogpost is about!
Type Help is the perfect testpiece for your relationship with "interface games"!

Corporations gather massive amounts of personal data to feed into algorithms. This obviously sucks, but it adds insult to injury that despite this treasure trove of data the algos are still so bad.
Netflix knows I watch a lot of Korean shows. It surely also knows I watch ONLY those Korean shows that have subtitles in English.
Yet, the app keeps sending me emails, notifications and in-app alerts about a show I would love to watch yet can't because there are no subtitles in English.
Heard a fellow cyclist complain his helmet ran out of battery.
What a world, what a world.
Forgot Jet Set Radio's soundtrack opens with the song "Let Mom Sleep".
It hits different after having kids for sure!
