I do a lot of #retrocomputing, #retrogaming, and #BBSing, and I have a fair amount of real retro hardware. I also have couple of #FPGA and some dedicated emulation machines (mostly handhelds).

I occasionally do electronics projects and board-level repairs/upgrades, as well the occasional project with #microcontrollers.

I also do quite a bit with various models of Raspberry Pis and other SBCs, both at home and at work.

Also, #cats. We have cats and they often make appearances in my posts.

I created a couple of ASCII aquariums with a couple of small ESP32-based display boards using this project...

@jimsalter@fosstodon.org I'm thinking of grabbing another personal domain. I'm currently using Godaddy for the couple of domains that I already have, but after listening to Ep 299 of 2.5 Admins where you talk about a lot of the issues with Godaddy, (and yeah, I've always had a feeling that they were more than a bit sketchy in many ways) who would you use for a casual personal domain these days?

@inverseatascii@techhub.social I used to just run caffeine, which worked reliably in PopOS 22.04. It just doesn't work correctly in 24.04 (in my case, at least). Might be a Wayland vs X11 thing. I would chase it down, but it's easier to just lock the machine and plug one of these micro controllers in. It works 100%, every time, on any OS, and an update's not going to break it.

@inverseatascii@techhub.social @tschak@oldbytes.space It's interesting to me that this article doesn't mention Mastodon or the Fediverse at all (unless I missed it). I would be interested to hear their opinions with regard to that.

@nixCraft@mastodon.social If it's only available LinkedIn, it's NOT available. it simply doesn't exist. I feel pretty much the same way about Discord.

@ironicbadger@techhub.social I did something kind of similar in 2015 with a Raspberry PiB (V1) and a Piface Digital hat.I have the relays on this thing wired in parallel with the wall buttons for my garage doors. I didn't have Home assistant back then (I was still running a Vera+) there's basically a python script that runs a simple web server and brings in the Piface Digital library. When I go to the proper URL, with the proper querystring, it activates the proper relay, and opens the associated garage door.

Also, yes, I know that you can kind of do something similar with caffeine / caffeinate, (https://linuxvox.com/blog/caffeinate-linux/) but that wasn't working reliably in the latest version of PopOS / Cosmic, so I resorted to using hardware, which has been 100% effective.

@ironicbadger@techhub.social I could call that URL/querystring from the Vera+ using Lua (the Vera+ did everything in Lua) or I could just access the URLs directly from browser shortcuts on my phone. The Vera+ has long since been retired and replaced with Home Assistant, But that Pi B1 is still out there in my garage rafters, doing that same job it has for about 11 years now. I've thought about replacing it with something like an ESP8266 tied directly into Home Assistant, but it works fine as is.

@ironicbadger@techhub.social One of the things I like about the older Pis as opposed to the newer ones..they don't need active cooling. Fans are a big point of failure. This thing doesn't need one. The other thing is, older Pis have a FULL SIZED HDMI port. I hate micro HDMI..very finicky. Kind of irrelevant in this case since I just access it over ssh, but that's been one of my beefs with the newer pis.

@inverseatascii@techhub.social Even at home it's a good idea to manually lock the machine while one of these is plugged in and a big job is running, if for no other reason, it mitigates the issues that could be caused by a cat walking across the keyboard, etc. Can't really just close the lid, because of the heat being generated by having all the cores lit up during long encodes.

@inverseatascii@techhub.social Yeah, you'd want to be careful where you use something like this, especially if you're in a corporate environment, which thankfully, I'm not. This fills a very specific use case for me. My laptop is by far the most powerful machine I have at my disposal at home for doing big video encodes (Handbrake, etc), compressing large files, and other things like that. I got sick of being hours into a job and having the machine suspend / power save and having to start over.
