- data must be a list of strings
- the lambda function takes the first 3 letters from a string
- map applies this to all strings
- now all identical string beginnings will be duplicates in that new list
- we apply set to make it unique and remove this duplicates
- finally we converted it back to list and have a unique list of 3 letter long string beginnings.

Probably I did not understood it correctly, but isn't this just a
list(set(map(lambda v: v[0:3], data)))
I like that usage 🙂
