Did you know that where I live, the tax office maintains a separate database of residents from the main registry and that the sync is not very good?
I didn't either until I got my tax bills addressed to Mr. Nora

@fooflington@infosec.exchange If there's a 403, the user agent is definitely not buggy. It was likely instructed to perform something invalid by the website, like with a dead link, or a normal link that leads to a page where the server is misconfigured.
For a dead link, the problem is not that the browser made the invalid request, but that there was a dead link on a website. The people responsible for fixing the issue are the website operators.
For users that don't understand HTTP, it does not matter what the exact cause was, whether their browser was directed to an incorrect page or whether the server has a bug.
For website operators the nuance is of course very important, that's why HTTP has it. But for users? it's really not

my favorite one was moving a variable declaration of a Vec down to where it was used instead of the start of the function, so that early returns before that didn't need to worry about dropping it

@fooflington@infosec.exchange @tdp_org@mastodon.social On a technical level, yes. On a "try booking your ticket again tomorrow" level, the advice is correct. And even sending the exact same request may work if the server is misconfigured.
The user is not a client, the user is using a website, which has server and client components. A 4xx is usually a client issue but the client is still part of the website.

@rain@hachyderm.io this is awesome, I've definitely done things like this before many times.. in my cases the usage was simple enough that a normal map worked fine, but this is nicer even then

@tdp_org@mastodon.social @fooflington@infosec.exchange This advice doesn't seem unreasonable. It's like that a normal user encountering a 403 is a website configuration issue where it has a broken link or they messed up authorization on an endpoint, both of which may be fixed in the future
