I finally finished The Picture of Dorian Gray. It took me three days to read what I could normally do in 4 hours. The flowery writing got on my nerves. This comes from someone who dragged her mother to see Hamlet performed. There are some things I didn't know about the book before. It's been censored from the original version by the publisher that Wilde gave it to. This is because of the obvious homosexual nature of the original work. Given the time it was written it's arguably an act of charity. Wilde himself put much of his own character into the book. It was speculated and later confirmed that Wilde was homosexual. Unfortunately, it was deemed illegal to be one. Odd considering that in Shakespeare's time men played women's roles. You have drag being a commonplace form in comedy. Only a person with vision problems could say Roger Taylor wasn't attractive in and out of drag. If I had the figure he had in the I Want to Break Free video, I might actually dress effeminate. Finally, there's Monty Python and their characters in drag. I bloody hate Spam as well. It was like pork flavored gelatin, absolutely disgusting. #books #portraitofdoriangray #oscarwilde
Just finished reading Escape to Witch Mountain. There are only small changes between the book and the Disney movie. Instead of traveling with a lonely man they travel with a priest. In this version they keep their cat. Disney made 2 movies along the lines of the books. Later came a made-for-tv movie. Then in 1995 Disney made a version where everyone has a twin. It's weird. In 2009 Disney made Race to Witch Mountain.
I'd say the book and movie are equally enjoyable. The first two movies are made in the late 70s and have that happy vibe that tells you there's a happy ending. There's one line read that is just perfectly done. The villain realizes that RVs aren't meant to fly.

I had to go buy some things to spiffy up my appearance for an upcoming DMV trip. You need assistance to buy hair dye, shaving cream, razors, razor blades, condoms, a lot of dental care, and more. Except for specialized dental products these are available at dollar stores. Although I understand not trusting dollar store condoms made in an unknown country. How desperate for ridicule are you?

This is one of my favorite childhood movies. It's based upon a book. In the book the place is called Fantastica. Honestly, I like Fantasia better. #teddybear #neverendingstorymovie
Finished The Diary of a Nobody. It's a rather odd book in that it's written as an actual diary. In some ways it reminds me of Pride and Prejudice. Most of the book is spent analyzing character amongst social status. I recommend neither. Both contain much snobbery. The son is quite disagreeable. He shows little respect or gratitude. #books #diaryofanobody

I can read a book with 350 pages in half a day. I choose the book The Picture of Dorian Gray because I already knew the story. I didn't realize that the writer liked to use 10 sentences to say what could be said in 5 words.
I chose to read The Picture of Dorian Gray for my reading challenge. It's a story that I know, and I figured it would be easier to read while I'm not feeling well. Writers must have been paid by the word at one time. Normal people: "Her dog is red." Old writers: "The young maiden prefers the company of a canine who has the burgundy coloring of wine tinted lips." Let this be a tip for anyone who has to write a minimum amount of words, or conversely, they need to condense the amount of words.
Halfway through the Summer Reading Challenge of reading 20 hrs. Finished reading Treasure Island. It's much more enjoyable if you picture the characters as their Muppet counterparts. The book has murders, drinking, and smoking. Because of how movies are age rated, these were absent from the Muppet version. I wouldn't want children to see a child shooting people. Another change was the traits of the marooned character. In the book he's found as a broken, reformed man. The movie it was a vain Miss Piggy. Miss Piggy was in a tribe, but there's no tribe in the book.
I would recommend this to teens and older. The tattered speech and a few objectionable words best suit a more experienced reader. It also pays to have familiarity with history. This helps explain the opinions of the British characters and their word choices. Hopefully, teens know that the objectionable words are used to reflect the times, and they should not be used in modern times. I wouldn't censor the language because it reflects who the characters are, arrogant. #books #treasureisland
Today's book was H.G. Wells' The Time Machine. It's been over 20 years since I had read it last. I remembered most of the book pretty well. This was the first time I found it irritating. It felt verbose. Maybe it's my shorter attention span, or maybe it's that I knew the ending. Originally I was going to read The Invisible Man, but it was quickly annoying. I was hoping the book would be better than the movie version I tried to watch. It's barely better because the innkeeper woman mistook screaming as acting. That could turn anyone into a misogynist. I strongly don't recommend. #hgwells #TimeMachine #books
If you're not in the US, it's possible that you don't know who Stephen Colbert is. He's a late night host on CBS. This is his last season because Trump got his pwecious wittle feelings hurt. Monday is his last week on air. Celebrities have found various ways to express their disgust to over stepping boundaries when coming on the show. Last night is one of my favorites. David Letterman had people take the furniture from the stage. So they finished out that part of the show in the audience. Then they threw them off the roof onto the CBS logo. They also threw off watermelon and a cake. Dave Letterman enjoys throwing things as much as I do. #thelateshowwithstephencolbert #davidletterman

I finally finished reading Dracula. The writer did a pretty good job at making sure there weren't loose ends. One of the main examples were the 3 witches who lured men to their doom. It's something that would've been easily forgotten otherwise. (Especially when the verbose writing is on one's nerves.) Great care was taken to remind the reader that the actions weren't exactly in malice. The vampires are merely people who were robbed of religious freedoms. Even Dracula is given pity in this realization that his actions weren't his will. The book ends with an update on life years later.
I get the sense that Bram & I shared a similar problem in ending our story. You've the problems solved, but there's no resolution. Our characters are traumatized, but they are unable to relate the events. Their sanity would be called into question. Since one of our protagonists runs an insane asylum, they are acutely aware of the danger of the label.
Much gratitude for this website: https://www.litcharts.com/lit/dracula
It offers a summary of each chapter as well as an explanation to its importance. Much of the story revolves around Victorian beliefs about women & sexual weakness. It compares it to modern culture as well. Vampirism isn't portrayed as a sexual concept usually. It's noted still that victims aren't willing participants. The victims purity is both religious & sexual. (I'm obviously avoiding a 4 letter word that starts with R. This is due to fears of censorship.) #books #Dracula #endreview
There have been books that have occasionally been on my reading list. I read Frankenstein because it's always being used in pop culture. It's the exact opposite of the Care Bears version. Now I'm reading Dracula. I'm between 2/3 and 3/4 of the way through it. If the writer was paid by the word count, he'd be obscenely wealthy. It's like reading Shakespeare, but with words that are recognizable. Hamlet's famous speech could be summed up in a couple of sentences. Most of Dracula is made up of diary entries. The language is so flowery that I have to find chapter explanations. Is it that difficult in Victorian times to just get to the point? "We were worried about Arthur's emotional and physical well-being when confronted the undead body of Lisa. He faced his task with great resolve. The piercing cries didn't phase him as we expected. When it was over he looked relieved of the emotional burdens he had carried." Two pages condensed into a short paragraph. (I sanitized it to not upset anyone.) #books #Dracula #review

The Day My Kid Went Punk (1987)
https://youtube.com/watch?v=l7-5UgmnZ2o&si=rE0IFRPM449Y_EO7
I'd high hopes for this movie after YouTube reviews. A middle child is ignored to the point his family forgets him. At the beginning after a recital he tries to tell his parents he's changing his looks. They barely listen to what he's saying. He ditches his clean cut image after he's dropped off at the airport. His summer job is running the child care center at a snooty conference center. The kids instantly love him because he's kind to them and fun. All of the adults assume he's a junkie and will destroy everything. Instead he is considerate to everyone even when they put him down.
His family shows up to give a conference on preventing punk. They immediately berate him. "How can you hurt us this way?" "I told you I was doing this before I left." Slowly they ease up, but they passive-aggressively reaffirm that their love is conditional. Eventually, they admit they actively ignore him, but it's his fault for not standing up for himself. Well it's hard to do so when everyone is talking over you. But, ha ha, I guess you're right. (Dickweeds) He's back at school, and now he's not welcome because of his looks. He's kicked out of orchestra. If he "fixes" himself, then he's welcome. To make his family happy he scales down his look, but he's reminded that they'll be happier if he conforms.
Great message. Be yourself, but conform. Typical 80s conformity sentiment. A so called happy ending. #AfterSchoolSpecials #review #spoilers

You won't be able to hear the movie practically. It's best to watch this once familiar with the movie. I also suggest being familiar with Roger Corman movies already, especially the loosely based Poe movies. Poe is brought up a lot as well as Freudian concepts. A quick overlook should be enough to understand references.
This will mainly interest film buffs, film students, and b-movie fans. There are direct quotes that feature f-bombs. Otherwise the movie is spoken about respectfully. #bmovie #RogerCorman #TheTerror #commentary

Meet the voice behind your favorite cartoon characters

Voice artists are on my cool people list. You don't realize how many people they bring to life until those characters can't be duplicated anymore. Mel Blanc, Don Messick, and Frank Welker were everywhere bringing our friends to life. Here's an idea. Make a list on a computer of every cartoon character you can think of. Then add to it by looking up popular cartoons 50s, 60s, 70s, etc. Add in their characters that you missed. Now go and look up who these 4 people voiced. If they voiced a character on your list, delete that name. Your list got significantly shorter. That's how much these 4 people matter to the world.

When microwaves were revolutionary, people went to restaurants for microwaved meals. I order out when I don't want a microwave meal. When I was young I was allowed to use the stove by myself. Eventually I was allowed to use the oven by myself. I stopped using them when I became too damaged to use them safely. Sometimes I miss being able to use them.

I'm rereading the OZ books. The library started their reading challenge right after I finished them. I just noticed something. The hen living in OZ is the only adult chicken. It takes a male and female chicken to produce a chick. How is she able to keep making chicks? Her offspring are having chicks as well. This is possible because both genders are available. However, this creates incest. Incest doesn't produce healthy children. How is it possible that her great grandchildren are perfectly healthy?

I'm not sharing this for the video per se, but the comments. So many are saying that when this episode was made were happier times. A freaking pandemic was a happier time. As a bit of a loner, I had very little problems with being in isolation. All I really missed were my weekly guitar lessons. #youtube #JohnOliver #lastweektonightwithjohnoliver
For a very long time my sweet beloved turquoise guitar was missing. It wasn't in the guitar closet. I was afraid it was lost forever. This morning I ventured into the pantry for something to settle my stomach. For some reason there it was. In this family you don't expect things to make sense. This guitar is lighter. With damaged shoulders and a warped back I can't handle much weight. Once my health improves I'm going to play again, pain or no pain. I missed you buddy.

#News #1983 #cabbagepatchkids I still have the ones I grew up with. My imagination was strong as a kid. A lot of my plushies were divided into families. One of my favorite CPK doll is a bald male doll. It was made smaller than usual dolls. Many of my plushies had back stories. This doll was named Jason. He lived with a gorilla family as an assistant parent. The family is run by a male gorilla named Hitty because he liked hitting his chest like King Kong. He was shunned for being allergic to bananas. (Later I realized this was how I was dealing with how I was getting treated for having food allergies.) He lived with me, but longed for a family. So he adopted various types of monkeys. Being a single father of monkeys was hard. Jason came to help out.

I deal with some of these or had to deal with them. Once I ended up in the hospital after being awake for 3 days. In college I was always sleep deprived. I honestly don't remember much of what I learned. However, the way I got things done was by breaking them up.
One of the best classes I took was personal finance. Being able to fully understand money isn't going to happen to me. It did get being thoughtful about money to the forefront of my brain. I refused to take out a student loan because I didn't have the ability to set aside money to pay it back.
I always feel like I'm a fraud about something. A lot of frauds have done well in life. They just managed to find gullible people. I only need to know slightly more than someone else in order to make it in life. Eventually, I'll convince myself that this will work.

I do logic puzzles. They must be scraping the bottom of the barrel.
I just had a clue that was roughly, "Between the blue item and the item that costs $10, one of them was white." Gee whiz! Is the blue item possibly the white one? Is the $10 item possibly the white one?

I was blessed to have a college English professor as a mentor in high school. My last two years of high school are when I shed my childhood nonsense. I had to be more responsible than most adults are. Our library district has a summer reading challenge. In the 90s it was limited to children. Later they included teens, and now they include adults. The ultimate goal was to read for 200 hours. It's done on the honor system. You have 3 months to accomplish it. I met it within 2 weeks. The library is still waiting for the prizes to be shipped. Originally, I was reading one novel a day. My eyes hurt from focusing. Hooray for eye drops. I need to buy more if I plan on continuing. I don't know if there's a prize for reading every day without fail. It's a nice distraction from reality regardless. This is the kind of discipline that was instilled by my mentor. I'll be grateful for having him as long as my memory holds out.

I managed to find the perfect book to follow up reading the Narnia series. Twin brother and sister are polar opposites when it comes to education. The girl is obsessed with reading, especially fairy tales, and insists upon there being only one lesson and perspective to a story. The boy has trouble focusing in class and enjoys finding alternative perspectives. Honestly, he makes some very valid points. The family is also coping with the loss of the father and financial problems that come with it. The father was the one who gave the love of stories to them.
I have a feeling my granma would've enjoyed this book. She was a teacher and loved children's books.

Finishing up the book and was confused by this cryptic response. This now makes sense both as a sibling and as a writer. Narnia was written for children with children's concerns. Some siblings feel like anything their kid siblings like is beneath them. Susan did try to mother them in The Lion The Witch and The Wardrobe.
