Utterly stumped by this #manhole cover. Definitely communications, it kind of looks like a rotary dial with an “N” in the center? Seen in Philadelphia.

@lpbkdotnet@mstdn.social I thought about that but I think the logo would have to be backwards for it to make sense

The Philly Wednesday Night Ride this week is partially inspired by Networks of Philly! If you ever wanted to bike a route and take in a lot of hidden telecommunications-related locations of the past and present, now is the time.

This Wednesday our ride will be a tour of hidden telecommunications-related locations past and present, designed and led by frequent Wednesday Night Rider Andrew P. Inspired by https://networksofphilly.org, the route features Bell Atlantic historical sites and modern internet infrastructure. The route had been thoughtfully designed as a loop through Center City and West Philly - we’ll be ending at a Prohibition Taproom, just up the street from the Rail Park.

We're Networks of Philly, a project focused on discovering and exploring networks/infrastructure in Philadelphia! We spend a lot of time looking at manhole covers and reading about fire hydrants and stuff like that. #introductions

Hey, I was interviewed for a piece in the Inquirer about government transparency! https://www.inquirer.com/opinion/commentary/philadelphia-government-transparency-right-to-know-20230731.html

I ranked 50 cities by government transparency. Philly came in last. | Opinion

Philly sits at the bottom of a 50-member ranking of large metros. There are ways to change that.

@WiteWulf@cyberplace.social @geospacedman@mastodon.social Possible, but this is way outside of Nynex territory. Its not unheard of for geographically “wrong” manhole covers to be used, possibly even from around the time Bell Atlantic and Nynex merged and maybe some old stock was shipped to weird places, but I also can’t find any other examples of this manhole cover in NY or anywhere else for that matter where you’d think it was more common, and there are a few of these in Philly.

@geospacedman@mastodon.social Yeah and the hex pattern is fairly old so it can’t even be used as a way to determine age.

@geospacedman@mastodon.social A few others have said it might be a lightning bolt, so it might not even be letters at all. I also noticed the connections to the finger holes, which are digits 1 and 8… which also means nothing to me.

@spencer@msto.cx Any backing info for this? Keystone did use a rotary dial in their logo designs a bit but this one looks off in the finger spacing. They also heavily featured keystones in their logos and other manhole covers and it’s weird for them to not do so here. If anything I’d say this shares more design language with the Bell manhole covers of the time but they really like plastering their logo.
