@miyuru An alternative scenario would be that they just failed to properly maintain a supply of available addresses. (Perhaps someone ordered a large amount all at once?) Also, IPv4 blocks are relatively speaking very cheap at the moment. If you need it, now is probably the best time to buy. Just don't buy at $99.99 like someone did, it messes with the graph! @jtk Google's #IPv6 chart is hovering between 45 and 49, it will hit 50% any Saturday now. https://www.google.com/intl/en/ipv6/statistics.html I hope that it's symbolic nature would trigger more adoption, spread awareness or makes ISP's take it seriously, but there's no guarantee that will happen. Regardless, here in the EU we still have a legal avenue in case of stubborn ISP's refusing to roll it out, but i prefer to keep that as a last resort measure...

@nyanbinary How could anyone consider themselves a well-rounded adult without a basic understanding of XKCD numbers? XKCD's are everywhere! It's hard to browse the internet without encountering one!

@nedbat@hachyderm.io That was... DENSE! But it is also a very interesting reminder that performance isn't straightforward. Perhaps software developers should be thought more of these things to make them think of how to make their code run fast and efficient. Even though computers get faster and faster, it's no use if software gets slower and slower at a faster rate.

@openfactory LOL, you did a serious analysis of the AI-slop IPv8 proposal... I'll certainly take those points as things to consider when i spec out the IPv11 draft.

@openfactory Fixing IPv4 would be pointless. By then, IPv4 is already gone and IPv6 has exhausted it's first /3 because every large org got their own /16... My proposal would obsolete the whole top-down process of handing out prefixes. Instead, you'd (cryptographically) generate your own prefix and announce that to your neighbors. The lack of central management makes it work even if the networks separate due to conflict, both technically and politically. Very desired in these unstable times. 😅

@nygren@hachyderm.io @phils@chaos.social Interesting... Would this be worse than when an IPv4-only recursive resolver encounters an IPv6-only authoritative nameserver? (Consistent failure versus inconsistent failure)

@torvalds@social.kernel.org Does using software under the GPLv2 license allow *anyone* to sue you? You'd think that if someone breaks the terms of a license, it'd be the owner of the software who has to sue for breaking the license. While this may be delegated, i doubt that the SFC has been delegated such powers.
